What to do with an ugly coin?
OK, I'm sure many of you buy on-line. What do you do with a certified coin that is ugly?
Do you return it? You take a loss there with return postage and return fees from Heritage and Teletrade
Do you crack it out and dip it? This is risky too if you cannot get the same grade when it is regraded.
Do you sell it off to someone else?
I've done all 3. Some coins I just cannot improve and they don't make the grade in the holder. I returned a 1928-S MS65 FH PCGS quarter to Heritage because it did not have a full head. I could try to sell it, but then others would reject it too.
I dipped a 1940 Proof 65 PCGS dime. It had hazy light tan toning that hid the mirrors. I've seen them that way in the origional mint cellophane envelopes. I dipped it and got it graded PF67.
I bought a 1930-S MS 65 FH quarter. It had nice colors on the reverse (end roll toning), but brown and black spots on a very white obverse. This one I sold off at the FUN show for a bit more than I paid. I was happy to get rid of it. I saw it come back on the market 2 months later by the same dealer for a high price!
Now, I've got another ugly one today I have to decide what I'm going to do

Once again resides with Legend, the original purchaser "raw" at live Eliasberg auction. Laura and i "love" the same lady!
My new delima is a 1881-S MS65 DMPL dollar. The picture didn't show the light haze on the obverse that hampers the mirrors. The reverse is nice with purple rim toning. I'm thinking of cracking it out and dipping just the obverse, or returning it.

HMMMM! I just keep trying to sell them. I've cracked and dipped two non-brilliant coins in my life with lousy results. I'm a cheapskate, so it's given me a bad taste in my mouth. heres an example of an ugly one that I want to crack and dip, but havent worked up the courage yet:
If you are dealing with TeleTrash, then you better enter the deal with low expectations.
If you buy a coin only from an image, you really don't know what
you are getting.
Three years ago, I saw what seemed to be a 65 RD Braided
Hair Large Cent in a 4 holder auctioned by Heritage. I know
this series, called Heritage, and asked a numismatist about it. The
Heritage rep responded that there were numerous small
flyspecks that didn't appear on the coin's image.
Never, never, never believe a copper coin's image when it comes to
color.
You can't see hairlines on proof coins on an image. I saw a
Seated Half in 6 in person that had numerous little spots of dip
residue. Ditto re a proof Barber Quarter in 5. These spots did
not appear on the coin's image on the seller's website.
Long, thin scratches also don't often appear on images.
Oftentimes, you also can't tell a scratch is on the holder
or the coin.
If you have a question, ask or E-Mail the seller. And don't even
think of bidding unless you know about conditions re returns.
People on these boards look after one another. Some people have
looked at lots for me that were being auctioned on the East Coast,
and I have returned the favor re Goldberg & Superior auctions.
If you pay attention to this thread, you will not have an issue re
what to do with ugly coins.
