Digital Camera for Coin Pics ??

Im am thinking about getting a digital camera. I dont need a top of the line camera, but I would like to take pictures of my coins. I am thinking about the Nikon coolpix 775 . Do any of you have any experience with this camera? I do know it has a macro for closeups. Any comments and suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks

I believe that Anaconda uses an older version of that camera and judging by his photos, it would be an excellent choice. I have two digi cams and both totally stink when in macro mode - Kodak DC5300 and a Cannon S20. When my wife lets me, the Nikon coolpix will most likely be the next camera I buy.

    Walt,
Nikon's are famous for their excellent macro mode. The 775 is one of their earlier digicams, but I'm sure it will work well for you. There have been many threads on digital photography here. Just do a search to find some of the pearls. In a nutshell, use a copy stand or tripod, experiment with your lighting (a $10 lamp with a 75W bulb will do - it's positioning that counts), and set your white balance to the light source (use custom white balance if available on that model).
  • I concur that the Nikon coolpix cameras that have macro mode (all of them don't) work extremely well.

I'm using a 3100, although the 2100 is great, too. Some of the others you can get used like the 4500, the 950 and others are great.

The $10 office depot self standing lamps wtih Reveal bulbs are great. Don't forget dark paper for the proofs and light paper for the MS and circs.

I have a Sony Cyber-shot model DSC-S70 and I love it. It's several years old so that model number has gone by the boards, but the camera has worked very well for me.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Can't go wrong with the Coolpix 995 - they keep getting cheaper!

I bought a Nikon Cool Pix 4300 a few months ago and have been extremely pleased with it. This is a current model and runs $500. The macro works very well, and the color reproduction is amazing.

My Fuji S602Z is coming soon image Not only is it great with macro, but it has so many settings, it can go from point and shoot to professional in a jiffy... I can't wait! image
