Benson coins aftermarket

I saw two barber halves from the Benson collection on Ebay today and went back and re-read old threads about the crazy bids many multiples above sanity that many of you noticed. I checked the Goldberg website to see the auction pics and the prices realized.

How has the after market been for these coins? Still fetching premiums? In particular I read that perhaps PCGS was tight on the pieces. Have those who bought the coins agreed with that consensus? I read that the Buff's in particular were splotchy and less attractive. For those who saw the coins what were the strongest series in terms of quality and the weakest series in terms of quality?

Lots of questions, so start typingimage

Let's talk Benson!

Tyler

P.S both the halves have already sold via BIN.

I've been pleased with the quality of this one and I don't think I paid a premium for the pedigree.

  • I was pleased also. I bought a toned three cent silver from BigD5 I believe for a little less than what it originally went for at auction. I then sold it on ebay with a Buy it now. The coins are great and the pedigree adds something magical to the coin.

I love my four Benson Buffalo's and I feel that the only premium I paid was for the color.

Many of the Indian cents that sold in the Benson I sale have upgraded -- I've posted some here over the past 2 years -- and though some are questionable I feel most were originally undergraded. Legend Numismatics got the wrong end of the stick on these the first time they were sent in, many of them bodybagged and now in high-end holders. What do you think this Benson/Newcomb coin should grade?

TWQG -- I agree. Very light rub on the high points but oh so much nicer overall than most 66RDs, it glows in the dark. Sold for solid 66RD money but is currently still in the 65 slab and owned by someone who knows the difference.

Since I posted four Buffalo nickels, top-to-bottom in this post, can anyone explain why the 1916 appears (to me anyway) to be
struck from slightly different dies? The detail around the corner of the mouth, extending down to the chin and also in the nape
of the neck. The first three coins are MS64's while the 38 is a MS66. When viewed in person, the detail is even more evident.
  • WWW, I do not know a thing about Buffs, except that yours are flat gorgeous!! Lovely color on those coins.image

I think the seated material out of Benson was the strongest in terms of quality, as well as the smaller denominations out of the same time frame of the late 1800's.

Some coins resurfaced after the auction from the resellers, and I saw many that were upgraded. Definately, they were undergraded. But most coins, it seems, haven't come out yet, indicating that many went into collections. I bought from Benson II, and although I haven't gotten around yet to send into for regrading, my expectations are real high when I do.

I've heard a few dealers comment that the Benson pedigree is playing strong in the marketplace on pricing. My bet is that will continue.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Some Benson coins have done fabulously well on regrade and resales. Others are still languishing on the market looking for permanent homes. Those tend to be the very pretty proofs with heavy hairlines under those "gem" surfaces. As always, it's the coin that really matters.

Some of those Benson coins are stunning, while others..............Roadrunner makes a good point with the hairlines. Of the limited number of Benson pieces which I've seen and handled personally, hairlines were an issue. I guess it's a matter of how critical you are of them.

WWW your buffalo's seem VERY attractive. I've seen some other buffalo's with the Benson pedigree that were plain awful. You must have been first in line!!! image
