It would be great to see a return (for a limited number of years?) of the buffalo nickel! In fact, I would like to see the Mint do a "Return to Classics" in all denominations, even for 5-10 years only. The downside might be people hoarding them due to their popularity and a subsequent shortage of circulating coinage!

  • I believe that all coinage should be changed every 5 or 10 years...Ken
  • NO, and i dont think it would be a problem with shortages they can always up production and make more.image

Pennies make dollars, and dollars make slabs!

....inflation must be kicking in again this dollar says spend by Dec. 31 2004!

  • I like the Jefferson & Monticello Nickel and hope this design returns unchanged after the Lewis & Clark commem ends.

Our coinage is too boaring. We need every single US coin redesigned. Their are other great things in which happened in this country. Lets see something new.

The Jefferson and Monticello nickel is an attractive design that belongs
to another era. Sixty five years is long enough for any design.

  • I agree - it's time to see some changes in circulating coin design - and not necesarily reverting back to classics. Let the past stay in the past. You mean to tell me there aren't better designs than Saint Gaudens and McNeil out there?

I voted no. Jefferson has been on the nickel long enough, and the Monticello on the reverse looks like a trolley car.

Jefferson was a great political theorist and writer. He was a mediocre administrator and only a slightly better than average president. His first term was highlighted by the Louisiana Purchase. His second was marked by a self-imposed trade embargo that ran the country into a major depression. In short as a president many historians have overrated him.

I think that it’s time to honor someone else on the nickel. We can debate who that might be, but since Jefferson has been around since 1938, it’s time for a change.

Don't hold your breath for change however. The Virginia congressional delegation has their minds made up, and few politicians are going to burn much political capital to oppose them.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • I do not have a problem with not returing to the original design(note my icon) but I do have a problem with changing just the Jeff Nick. The penny and the roosie have had their day. Also the half.
  • The rule was every 25 years. I believe this rule be followed!! image

The 25 year rule is not mandatory, however, it should be.

I voted NO! The designs on our circulating coins have been around too long, anyway. I think Liberty should be returned to our circulating coinage.

    My five cents:
The current legislation, if signed by President Bush, will revert the nickel back to Jefferson in 2006, NOT 2007.
I hate when people set up polls with the default being what they want to hear. Most polls would list the "yes" answer first and the "no" answer second. Why did cosmicdebris feel it was necessary to reverse the order. Most people don't really care, and IF they did care they would contact their congressman to write a new law before the end of 2005 which could mandate ANY design the lawmakers wanted on the 2006 coinage. Just my five cents. Steveimage
  • I don't want any dead presidents on the coinage!!! I think coinage, in the distant past, had great designs. Let's go back to great designs and beautiful coins.

65 years is long enough for the same design.

  • The 25 year rule not being used is destroying coin collecting. There's no reason to hoard the Lincoln cents. There will be more next year.image
Personally, I do hoard the copper cents.image

Steve: Go back and read the thread. Overwhelmingly collectors want to see new
designs on the nickel and all the coinage. Many people have written or e-mailed
our representatives to make our views known. Many collectors find the designs
dated and evidence more of stagnation than of great art. Certainly everyone doesn't
agree including the Virginia delegation who mistakingly believe new designs would
detract from the interest of tourists in visiting or supporting Monticello.

But the vote is against the return of the current design because collectors like to see
some change, not because of some bias in the poll.

One other note, I did write my Congressmen and Senators as well as the Virginia Hijackers.

    Another thread on this topic.

    Nope!!
  • If the mint changed designs more often (every 25 years, maybe?), then they would probably make more money selling proof and mint sets as people would notice the design changes and become interested in collecting coins. They'd have to come up with some interesting designs, though. They might even consider changing dies often so that for each year there'd be a "type I", "type II," etc. for each denonination. This would also benefit the grading services.

So, no - don't bring Jefferson back in 2006.

    Dan
  • no. once a design change is implemented , no going back to original . quarters will (must ) have different reverse in 2010 !

  • thanks for the welcome . if you are a citizen of a state or territory , why wouldn't there be a quarter ? mint has to make quarters every year anyway . do we need a poll? no. thought it was a done deal already ?

Only thing left is for the Prez to sign the Bill.

Has everyone voted? I want to use this poll as a sample in a few letters I am going to write to some politicians as long as you all don't mind. So please everyone vote.

I thought I would get a more diverse resolts by posting this on a non coin forum.

    Here are the results.

Seems non coin collectors could care less. I wonder how the average non coin collecting american would answer?
