Bad Experience with eBay

EDITED: DIDN'T REALIZE THAT EBAY's SELLER FEE REFUND SYSTEM WAS SO DIFFICULT. I CERTAINLY DO NOT WANT TO BE UNFAIR. SOUNDS LIKE THE FAULT HERE IS WITH EBAY. SORRY.

Are you certain he didn't just file for refund of fees based upon a "Returned Item"? I've done that before. Doesn't sound like Russ.
  • If you paid by paypal, then the auction link would say so. SO,, maybe you would like to share the link to the auction. Accusing people without showing just cause is WRONG!!!!!>>>....Ken

    jamesfsm,
I have bought several items from compucheap on ebay and had nothing but great results. Email him and discuss the problem. He seems to be a very reasonable person.

What may have happened was when Russ was filing to get his Ebay fees refunded, he didn't state the proper reason for the refund, OR he checked off the box that stated he had received monies fromt he buyer (when in fact, if the money is refunded, the seller did not receive any monies), that part can be a bit confusing if you've never had to file a refund before.
You have to file a non-paying bidder when trying to get a refund, but normally when you click the proper icons, the formality of a non-paying bidder warning doesn't go into effect.
I remember the first time I was trying this, I had to stop and email Ebay to make sure I wasn't doing exactly what is described here: giving the buyer a non-paying bidder warning when they had returned a coin. If the proper icons are filled out, the non-paying bidder warning doesn't go through, and the Ebay fees are refunded.
What didn't he tell you he was doing? The refund of his Ebay fees? I'm confused a bit by your last statement. He does have to file the non-paying bidder form in order to get his Ebay fees refunded. As I said above, if the proper icons are filled out, the warning doesn't go through, and the Ebay fees are refunded.
Sounds like a simple mistake, but I'm not sure if it can be simply remedied.

I wasn't aware that eBay would refund ANY fees if the buyer returns an item. Am I missing something here?
Went back and reread ALL of the eBay fee terms. I stand corrected and informed.

    hey jamesfsm

why didn't you post this here without reference to the sellers ID?? you probably would've gotten better feedback in that manner. like it or not, once names are mentioned bias is inevitable and helpful input gets a little skewed.

If a buyer wishes to return an item, your final value fees will be refunded from Ebay. Not your listing fees, although if the item is relisted, and sells the next time, they also get refunded.

I don't think it matters who the parties are that are involved. It's a simple mistake (sounds like it to me), but I'm not sure how simple the remedy is.

If it was reported as a returned item, then there's no worry. The seller gets their selling fees refund by eBay and it is not a black mark on the buyer (like it is with a true non-pay situation). eBay needs to change the name of this action as it applies to a returned item as non-paying bidder is has a bad stigma too it. Check the e-mail from eBay and see if it says something about deciding not to keep the item. If that is the case, then you're both in the clear.

There is a specific reason in the drop down menu when you file your FVF fee refund request that states buyer returned the item. In this case, you won't get a warning. Sounds like Russ selected the wrong reason which caused you to get a warning.

Did you try to talk to Russ before you posted this? Sounds to me like a little communication could have cleared this up without the need to air dirty laundry on a public board.
  • wayneherndonwayneherndon Posts: 2,356 ✭✭✭
If he selected the wrong option, it becomes a two-stop process and the non-pay status doesn't go on your account until the second step is taken (where the seller says the buyer STILL hasn't paid) which has to be at least 10 days after the first step.

So, if accidently selected the wrong one, all that has to be done at this point is abandon the process and go with the correct one (returned item) and everything will be fine.

thanks for the thread as I need to do this!
  • Ebay has a very poor setup for getting your final value fees refunded on a return item, they should make it a little easier to apply for credit because of a returned item. With their current setup you have to file a non paying bidder claim instead of an item returned claim, they should make it so if you choose returned item that you go to a new page which would help alleviate some of the confusion that occurs with their current setup.

I do not know about these ebay issues, but these flame threads based on a disagreement, misunderstanding, or human error are getting a bit old. I would suggest that Jamesfsm immediately edits the title to the thread so that it is less a flame to Russ and more an informational thread about this ebay issue.

I only know Russ from this forum, and only for several months, but he seems to be a very fair, decent, and intelligent person who would not intentionally harm his buyer.

  • MadMonkMadMonk Posts: 3,743
I also feel that this threads title is a little out of line. Especially if there was no prior communication to resolve the issue. It saddens me that people, in general, will use this board as a FIRST rather than LAST resort.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
  • The first time I had a coin returned for a refund I too was very confused. I didn't want to leave a bad mark for a very good buyer.

Even if you select "High bidder paid for item and returned it. You issued a refund to bidder." an email goes to the high bidder asking him to do nothing if indeed he has returned the item for a full refund.

Oh, c'mon, guys! Didn't you see all the little "smileys" in Crito's post. I know it's a touchy subject, but Every sentence has a humorous emoticon. Overdipped and AT coins in PCGS slabs? Isn't he doing a sort of send up on the anti-ACG website?

The initial post should have been handled with an e-mail or two. I'm sure it will work out. I'm also sure that, were I Russ, I would be pretty cautious about this seller since he's taken the matter to such a public place for discussion.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.

  • He probably filed the report stating you and him decided not to complete the trade. he's a gentleman and am sure thats what he has done. this is no reflection upon you. just ignore and let Russ get his fees back.

If you don't like that, send Russ a check for the Sellers Fees. Here's how you calculate how much. 5.25% up to $24.99 and 2.75% for amount over that. Russ should not have to pay Sellers Fee if coin is returned. Let it run it's course or send him the Seller Fee Charges.

<< <i>I normally leave this stuff for emails and such but I'm burning mad. I bought a "rainbow" 1964 Kennedy off eBay from Compucheap. Paid IMMEDIATELY by Paypal. Well, I didn't like the coin (wasn't really a rainbow) and returned it for refund. To this point, it's all fine and dandy.

Well, I get a communication today from eBay. Seems that Compucheap didn't want to pay the eBay fees and reported me as a Nonpaying Bidder in order to get his fees back. WELL, I DID PAY! Now, I have to go through all the eBay BS to get this improper warning removed. I'm VERY angry. And, Russ/Compucheap didn't even have the courtesy to tell me he was doing this. >>

Easy there jamesfsm, easy! No need to get all mad & worked up over an eBay deal!
I'm sure Russ didn't mean to turn you in as a NPB.
I recently returned a coin to a board member and he asked me how to get his FVF credited because he couldn't figure out how to do it.
I pretty much thought I knew how to navigate eBay and even got to the screen K9AZ showed but all things indicated a NPB warning would be issued so my seller finally gave up and ate the fees himself.
Neither me nor my seller are morons or idiots but we couldn't figure out how to do it. I think eBay plans it like this on purpose!!!! GRRRRRR!!!
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • Dog97, the first time I saw that screen I was bewildered. I didn't want to do anything negative. I posted in the eBay forums and was told that there is no negative if you choose "Bidder paid, received the coin, and returned it for a full refund". The bidder does get email saying something like "if you returned the item for a full refund do nothing".

eBay used to make you wait a few weeks to even get to that point! Now the refund the FVF sooner. It is still a very confusing process.

Ebay sends a non-paying bidder mail if you try to get the fees reversed, for any reason. Don't get pissed at the person who is getting the fees reversed, get pissed at Ebay. I am sure ebay does this so if someone is trying to get around fees by saying sold items were returned, the person who made the return will email back saying that they paid and nothing was returned. All ebay cares about is getting money, regardless of how the actual transaction took place.
