20th Century types you DON'T own!

Which of the following nineteen 20th Century types listed below (non-gold) do you NOT own? If you own them all, which obsolete types were the last to be acquired?

Also, do you have them all in MS or Proof? If you do, which were the last to be acquired in those grades? And if you are close to a complete MS/Proof set, which coins do you still need?

Did you once own a certain type, but later sold all you had of that type?

I would appreciate any interesting stories about this subject. (I listed each coin as to its most basic type. I know most type sets break up some of the types into narrower subtypes. Perhaps I shall post a thread about the subtypes later.)

CENTS: Indian, Lincoln
NICKELS: Liberty Head/V, Buffalo, Jefferson
DIMES: Barber, Mercury, Roosevelt
QUARTERS: Barber, Standing Liberty, Washington
HALVES: Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin, Kennedy
DOLLARS: Morgan, Peace, Eisenhower, Anthony

  • I have some miscellaneous stuff - but I don't have any barbers - for some reason circulated barber coins don't appeal to me - I remember as a kid I used to think the bust of liberty was a man - didn't really care for them. Today I can very much appreciate higher grade Barbers, but then you're usually talking a good chunk of change, so I've steered clear - but they're great coins! Just haven't turned my head in that direction yet image

I have them all as I'm a type collector trying to get one of EACH example of coins issued by the Federal (and Confederate) goverment. Those ones you listed are the easy ones. The indian cent was the last to be aquired as I was very particular on it. I received a beautiful 1906 Indian Cent in PCGS MS-65RED from Shylock.

I've got them all, but only the Proofs are certified. I've bought and sold many of the "fully dressed" Standing Liberty quarters, but the pieces in my collection are only AU. I'd like to get as many of the pieces as possilble in Proof.

I'm currently missing the Matte Proofs and the Walking Liberty half dollar. I've got the rest. I'm not sure I care enough about the Matte Proofs to really spend the money to keep them. I've owned serveral Matte Proof Buffalo nickels, but I always got tired of them and sold them. They just don't turn me on like the brilliant Proofs do.

    FC57 & Prooflike,

MS/Proof Barbers are really beautiful! In those grades, Liberty really looks like a lady! Unfortunately nearly all Barbers are worn, and most are worn heavily. I think I've seen more F-AU Seated coins than I have Barbers.

  • Interesting question and the answer depends on what "Type Coin Collection". I pursued the Eagle Certified Album route and found the Clad 1976-S Kennedy Half the most elusive. Yet, I've tried to sell my PCGS PR69DCAM several times for $70-95 without result. Did I miss something? Is this an easy coin to find?

barbers. i don't really care for them and then when you factor in the ridiculous prices - my collection has none.

Have em all, including sub-types, Type 1 and 2 Buffs, Type 2 (silver) Jeffs, Type 1 and 2 SLQ, Lincoln varieties, etc ... not all certified, of course. I agree with the observation that few coins look worse than a well-circulated Barber ... All in unc/proof but, Type 1 SLQ and Barbers -- have all EF/AU Barbers for my type set. Decent looking coins in VF+ and above ...

Got 'em all. Used to have all of them in MS and proof (including all the gold in MS63+), but sold 'em. I had some nice coins. Many forum members now own some of my old friends. Now what I have is mostly circulated stuff, but some MS and proof, some raw and some slabbed. This is my inventory in my small booth at the mall. (Basic collector coins, not high-end stuff.)

Well, in slab form, I'm missing these major types:

    Indian head cent
    Liberty Nickel
    Barber half
    Clad Ike
    Gold 2.5
    Gold 5
    Gold 10

If you consider any, slab or raw, I'm missing only:

    Gold 2.5
    Gold 5
    Gold 10

  • I've got them all certified, and seriously considered selling them, had little to no response with a query "is this the time to sell?" about a month ago. I thought some would respond considering possible tax refunds, but, ... nada. Is it the economy? Is it the coin market? What?

Is this a "Type Coin" market? My feedback says... No, this is Not the time to sell..

    Sincerely,

    Dan

I have all of them circ and I have been putting together a 20th century type set in proof. I don't have the barbers of the buffalo yet and the standing quarter and Peace dollar are MS (No way I'm getting the proofs on those two.)

I don't have the Barbers or the Indian cent. Working on a circulation strike set.

  • I've got them all. I'm going for proof. Where I don't have proof I have MS. The MS types I have are:

    Standing Liberty Quarter
    Peace Dollar
    Morgan Dollar
    T1 Buffalo

I hope someday to acquire a proof Morgan, T1 Buffalo and Matte Proof Lincoln.

I am also working my way back into the 19'th century as well as California fractional gold.

  • Ooops! I just realized I sold a couple of my gold types so I need both a $2 1/2 and a $20 Lib. I've put gold on the back burner while I work on minor coins first.
  • Hehehe.....why do i get the feeling that if Louis Eliasberg was alive today and a member of this forum.........we'd all be in for a very long response to the thread starter's questions!

I'd like to get a few more of the early Flowing Hair type coins to follow my FH Half dime.......that "Wimpy Eagle" is kinda cute. (with prices that aren't!). That Proof 67 Morgan Adrian has up gets me excited......but i'm being good right now. (too much on the fire right now but i DO need a nice Morgan for my type set.....i've sold off examples that weren't set keepers).

Me......slow going building an "Eye Appeal" type set, with some keys! Sometimes i find a coin that fits everything........except my budget! In the past i've had some ready cash but couldn't find a coin that really got me excited. Then i met Adrian and now the coins are no pboblem. The cash is another story!

I have them all, including subtypes, certified. All are in MS grades except for two... a Barber dime in AU58, and a Type 3 SLQ in AU58FH. I will upgrade those someday, but they are so close to being Unc and are very pleasant to look at, so I'm not really in much of a hurry.

I have all of them in a raw 20th century type set album:

CENTS: Indian, Lincoln (1909 IHC, 1909/1909-VDB/1943-S/1968-S/2000 Lincs)
NICKELS: Liberty Head/V, Buffalo, Jefferson (1909 LH, 1913 T1/1926-S Buffs, 1943-D/1983 error Jeffs)
DIMES: Barber, Mercury, Roosevelt (1913-S Barb, 1921-D Merc, 1955/2000 Roos)
QUARTERS: Barber, Standing Liberty, Washington (1908-O Barb, 1917 T1/1927-S SLQ, 1959-D/1976/1976 silver, 1968-D Wash, and all year 2000 state Qs)
HALVES: Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin, Kennedy (1914 Barb, 1943 WLH, 1953 Frank, 1964-D/1976/1976silver/1987 Ken)
DOLLARS: Morgan, Peace, Eisenhower, Anthony (1903-S Morgan, 1926-S Peace, 1974-S silver/1973-D/1976/1976silver IKEs, 2000 SBA)

The last coin I obtained was the 1903-S morgan (circulated not MS) which replaced a MS 1904-0.

I wish the album also contained a page for half-dollar and dollar commemoratives as well as a SAE.

I have full mint state and proof PCGS registry sets. I just love 20th Century Type collecting. The last piece I needed and just acquired is a proof Morgan. Found a beautifully toned 1903 in PCGS PR66. Link to an article I wrote on 20th Century type for PCGS

I have all of the nineteen very basic types I mentioned, and all but a half dozen are Mint State or Proof. Only the Barber dime and quarter are below Fine. But believe it or not, I still haven't gotten a 1909 VDB cent or 1913 Type One Buffalo.

I have a key date representative from each series except Roosevelt dime, and Eisenhower $, and SBA $,
That is because there are no key dates in the roosey dimes, the sba key date is a proof which I dont bother with and the eisenhower is too much a modern to me.

  • FlashFlash Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭
the sba key date is a proof which I dont bother with

Actually, if you prefer mint state coins, the SBA you'd want in your key-date type set is the 1981-S circulation strike.

Regarding non-gold 20th century types: As I said before, I still don't have the 1909 VDB cent or Type 1 Buffalo, but I have all 19 very basic types on the list.

The last types on the list to be acquired were the Standing Liberty quarter (mail order, 1970's, a Type One) and Barber quarter and half (I got the latter two at a flea market, probably in the 1980's). I later got a recessed date SLQ (flea market, probably in the 1980's) and a 1917-24 type SLQ (mail order, 1990's).
