UPDATED - COIN RECEIVED - Opinions on a Recent Purchase - PCGS Standing Lib Quarter

I briefly discussed this coin with another member and wanted to open it up to the boards for more thoughts/opinions on grade and quality.

HERE IS THE LINK

A few years ago I had sold one a few grades higher that did not look as nice as this one (and I actually bid much higher than I would because I thought this 62FH should be a higher grade) but that is my opinion and I am looking for yours.

Thank you,
Chris

The image looks great. The only thing I could see popping up, would be the luster. If it graded 62, it's probaby been dipped, and maybe doesn't have full mint luster left. That's just a guess though. SLQ's, to me, are one of the tougher series to narrow down, as far as 63's, 64's etc.

I have no idea how to grade these, and that one looks beautiful to me!image But, I can tell you from personal experience that this seller is very capable of capturing luster on a coin when it is there. I picked up one of my Walkers from them.

Looks real nice to me. Apparently there is SOMETHING I can't see though; 62 seems kinda' cruel. Looks like a bit of weakness centrally, but 62 seems brutal.

Looks all right but appears to have some light friction running up and down Liberty's leg. Really got to watch out for that. Could mean the difference between a 62 and a 58 if you're not careful. Unfortunately this friction seems to be found on many "unc" pieces, market grading at work. When I buy an unc it is imperative that there is no friction or "rub" to be found.

The coin looks great, but it's got a very light rub from the thigh down to Ms. Liberty’s shin. That’s why it was graded MS-62. Sadly many MS-63's have a rub on the knee.

So long as dealers will agree to BUY and SELL coins like this as MS-62, I won’t condemn the practice completely, although I wish that did not happen. I have problems with it when dealers buy them as AU-58, sell them as MS-62 and then only offer AU-58 money to buy them back. That stinks. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I am aligned with the comments thus far (luster, cruelty and contact on thigh).

I actually saw the contact on the thigh and thought that it stopped above the knee and the shin was more of a rub (I guess I'll wait to get the coin to see the shin a little closer). The strike impressed me and the clean knee and shield which are typically scuffed up in this series. My personal guess was at least a high-end 63 or low end 64. I compared this one with a few others in 64 and I actually like this one for overall appeal.

That is one PQ MS 62...there are 65's that don't look as nice.

I HAD a PCGS MS65 FH 1930 that didn't look as nice, actually.

Well, mine was nice. More satiny than lustrous. It had a nice look to it, and found a good home with a well-known forum member. But I would have had a harder time parting with it if it were a blazer like that 62. I do like white coins.

You gotta love 62: as a "bargain" grade delivering "bang for the buck", it rivals AU58.

Tonelover and Bill Jones have told you correctly. The strike is great and it has a nice full head with the ear hole. There are no major distracting marks so it has the look of a 65. But there is the light rub on the leg which shows up as a lighter color. It does look nicer than some Au 58's I've seen. The 1930 is the easiest SLQ to get in a full head. If you don't like it one it arrives, return it. It sould not be too hard to find another in FH.

  • Wanted to follow-up to advise everyone that I received the coin yesterday and here are the details (looking at the coin a little closer in person):
    - the luster was definetely there (bright white)
    - the contact on the leg was from the hip to just above the knee and there was something on the slab in front of the shin (the contact mark does not go down that far)
    - the reverse is absolutely gorgeous (in my opinion probably MS65++++ to MS66)
    - there was a contact mark on the cheek, which will probably keep it away from the MS65 grade overall
    - in my opinion the coin is probably a low-end to mid-end MS64 (which is good because I had bid it close to a MS63FH)

    Appreciate everyone's input.
