PCGS Grades #8,000,000

But was it staged? Did the 8th million coin just happen to be a 1917-S 25c in 67FH, or was this one standing by for the big number? If I was running PCGS PR, this would be my tactic. Nice coin, either way!

The same thing for the 7th million coin. Wasn't it a 3 legged buffalo?

I'm sorry, but I think it is rigged.

I thought for sure that my tar-stained 1992 XF Jefferson nickel was in line to be 8,000,000....

    What a rip off!

    I guess 8,000,001 isn't that bad.

Didn't McDonald's run a similarly rigged promotion for their "10th billion burger"?
  • Were there mistakes in this Press Release?

One thing I think is odd that in describing the Proof grades of the 1804 dollar the the 1913 nickel, the letters PF are used instead of PR. NGC uses PF, PCGS uses PR on their slabs.

Also, wasn't the Childs coin PCGS PR68?

Well, the coin certs have no relationship to the invoices or the order the coin was received. But, like many of these type of announcements, it didn't happen by chance that the particular coin ended up 8000000.

you'd think that for $160,000,000, which is what YOU've paid pcgs over the years, they'd come up w/ something better than that

What no prize? The owner of # 7,000,000 got something like three free gradings as I recall. Wasn't he a gold member, a sailor from Kings Bay, GA as I recall, who had submitted the Buff nickel as one of his four freebies?

  • What I don't get is I just received some coins back last week and they are all numbered in the 21,000,000 (million)range exp. #21257800.I have some that are numbered in the 4,855,470,100 (billion)range that are older. So how in the he[[ do they come up with 8,000,000 (million) buy using the numbers on the slabs?image

They don't. The cert number is effectively random (though it isn't actually random). I'm sure their computers could do it. Probably with the same accuracy as the JFK airport singling out their 1 billionth person a few years back.
  • I dont know about all that stuff, all I know is that right now it is much easier to buy a coin in a late model PCGS holder than it is to try to send one to them and to get it made. Much cheaper to just buy one already in a PCGS holder as well! image

Ahhhh come on guys!! What I can assure you of is that we sent the 17 S T2 SLQ in for grading and then received a call from PCGS letting us know that this SLQ was the 8 millionth coin to be graded and asking if we would allow it to be used in the press release. I was certainly not expecting it, planning for it or anything else. A nice thing to have happen to be sure, but no need to read more into this.

Airplanenut.....you're funny!!! "Quick! Someone add it to your registry set before Whitlow gets it back to sell it! " That's a new approach to adding coins to a registry set!! Besides, who said it would be for sale anyway?

Just had to chime in here before I caught too much slack for our NICE coin being the 8 millionth coin graded...which is no reason to catch slack for anyway near as I can tell.

  • So Mike......how much did it cost 'ya to bribe 'um? hehe Personally, i would have saved this milestone coin for a nice Type 1 SLQ.......just "something" about THAT coin that really gets to me.....but i can't quite put my finger on it!

Seriously, is that 8,000,000 coin "really" 8,000,000? If you take into account all the crackouts and resubmissions......aren't we really at something like 2,000,000 DIFFERENT coins? Bet it's close!

They stopped grading economy until a nice coin came through the works.

    Mike,

I have no doubt that your coin is legitimate and that you sent it in as a regular course of business having no idea that it would end up being #8,000,000. The cynicism isn't about you.

It's just a little too strange that the milestone just "luckily" fell on a coin of that magnitude. With PCGS grading 70,000 plus coins a month, what are the odds?

  • I am sure they picked the coin because of it's rarity. I couldn't see them wanting a special event serial number going to an AU53 1999 Georgia State Quarter...
