Anyone ever seen a yellow ring PCGS holder?

I got this at Santa Clara. Pretty neat. The inter ring is really yellow and not like it was changed by heat or with the sun. Anyone else seen any like this?

That's a new one on me. Why don't you post it on the Q&A board for DH. Also, condor101 will probably be interested, especially, if they made them like this for a period.

conspiracy theory #1.. someone injected sulpher-something into the ring trying to AT a coin!!!

  • I thought of that also. The seal around the slab is intact and there isn't even a small chip or hole where something could go through. The slab is untampered with.

I wonder if it was a victim of the "irridation" (sp?) process at the USPS during the anthrax scare? In coin world there was an article telling of some melted slabs & damage collectible currency that went through the process last year.

Edited to say- Nice coin inside!

I had a slab that I've had for a few years. All of a sudden, the ring started to turn yellow. I panicked, called Charlie, and had it taken care of.

    Tuesday?

New to me. (If anyone has one I'm interested) I wondered about the irradiation but I just don't know. From what I understand they irradiate the mail with a fairly powerful energy level and so far all of the slab type materials I've seen that have been exposed have been warped or otherwise damaged by the exposure. This doesn't seem to show anything beyond the color of the the ring.

I mentioned to Cameron by PM about one possibility. Many soft transparent plastics include a UV stabilizer is part of their formulation to keep them from yellowing when exposed to strong light. (Its a problem in the vinyl flooring industry) It may be possible that PCGS got a bad batch of rings once. I don't know. Hopefully DH can help on this one.
