1818 Large Cent

I was inspired by AgentJim007s recent post about a Randal Hoard Large Cent. I saw one at the Santa Clara show today and bought it! The photos are not all there yet, but I wanted to show it off right away image

I don't really know anything about early large cents. I probably should have studied them more. You know, I should have bought the book.

I am only half way through the show but have an appointment in 5 minutes. I met up with several forum members. The show seemed exciting to me and I am going back tomorrow.

Nice coin, Carl. You didn't go wrong!
  • I like that one, but miss lib looks so distressed. Must be the economy.

Yes, there was in economic depression in 1818.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

In the Breen Encyclopedia, Dr. Sheldon is quoted as saying this about the matron head design:

...resembles the head of an obese ward boss instead of a lady

    Ouch!

    Cool coin though

Great coin, Carl. I always liked the "connected stars" die breaks on some of those early Coronet pieces.

I would like to get an 1818 with that cool die crack just like that.
  • Thanks gang!

I was wearing my holey coin hat. The guy I bought it from said he saw somebody at the Charlotte (I think) coin show who also was wearing a holey coin hat. But this guy was also wearing a holey coin vest. I said I thought I knew who it was. I was thinking it was Lord Marcovan.

I guessed this coin might be graded AU. I asked the dealer what he thought it was. He said AU and priced it accordingly.

Yep. I'm definitely the person sighted in Charlotte. image Wore both the Holey Coin Vest and Holey Gold Hat, and added two gold dollars to the hat and two elusive type coins to the vest while I was there (a 20 cent piece and a Draped Bust half).

Glad you're using the Holey Coin Hat. I'll have to send some extras your way one of these days. Matter of fact, I just got five more Holey large cents, and one was an 1818. I think I might already have an 1818 on the back of my vest- can't remember.

(Of course, it doesn't look anything like your nonholey coin, there...) image

  • Only thing that seems to interest me lately are these old large cents. Nice Score.
