Yes this is a decent coin in Fine, and the seller is good guy too.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

definitely NOT. borderline vf detail, yes, but our friend "ernie" conveniently forgot to mention the graffiti on the obv above the date & on the rev. above the eagle's wing.

    PASS BIG-TIME

btw, i have not had good luck w/ this seller in the past

  • Hi there! Here is an original 1825/3 Bust Quarter that we grade VF-20. It has no graffiti or other problems either. I think you'll see that our coin is significantly better than the one in the ebay auction, and gives you a good idea of what to look for in a mid-grade capped-bust quarter. Hope you find a nice one!

If you like it you should get it. Ernie may be a good guy but he perpetually overgrades and retails his coins on Ebay. No true auction here. I have seen at least two or three hundred auctions by Ernie that I shake my head every time for his price VS grade VS non original condition.

If you are patient you can find one with that cool dark toning in the protected devices, lighter silver in the open areas original looking coin. They fetch hefty premiums as a 1000 others want them too, but well worth the wait.

    Just my opine though

I guess rim dings don't count?

I see some scratches, probably what Sir DorkKarl is refering too, plus, to me, it's overgraded. The old two grade shuffle.

the coin in jadecoin's digi-pic looks like it has near vf-30 detail, properly netted down to vf-20 for the rim bumps. but is that a thin scratch in front of the face going through the "t" of liberty?

    DorkKarl --

That is no graffitti, it is clash marks from the reverse ribbon, and the bust. Get Browning book and do some research before you bash other peoples coins. You can not expect a coin that was struck without a collar to be fully struck like an 1834 quarter.

As for the rest of my items, we grade using the ANA guide and 30+ years of combined numismatic experience. The pictures are clear, if you don't like my stuff then don't buy it. Call the coin a G-4 or an AU, I don't care, the price is the price. We are selling coins, not grades, if you want grades, buy them slabbed. (And we have never seen an overgraded coin in a PCGS or NGC slab have we!)

We must be doing something right because we have NO negatives or Neutrals that complain about overgraded coins. We always get penalized and talked about because we have good pictures (perhaps too good) and people can be over critical about the coin. Would it be better to have a fuzzy dark picture? Unlike 70% of the other sellers on ebay, at least when you bid on my items you will know exactly what you are getting. No one is holding a gun to anyones head forcing them to buy our stuff and by looking at our feedback you'll see several people with hundreds of feedback buying coins from us on a regular basis, so we are obviously doing something right.

What did you buy from us dork??????

    Ernie

(And yes, I do read the boards)
  • sometimes people on these boards can be too critical. I think the half is a fine looking coin, a cut above most of the ebay trashimage

i hereby offer an open apology to ernie.

IF the black vertical line extending above the 1st "8" & to the right from there, & IF the 2 black lines just left of stars 12-13, & IF the 2 black lines above the eagle's right wing (facing), IF ALL those mysterious black lines are NOT graffiti, then this coin is real, real close to being VF.

of course ernie, i just MIGHT have been thrown off by a couple of your other auctions, such as the "vf 1811" dime that doesn't even have full rims, the 1807 quarter you say has a "G" reverse, which is odd since not even half the detail is visible, the XF 1818 quarter that looks just like the VF in the ana grading guide (that you yourself reference), the 1798 bust dollar in about XF with remarkably flat detail, the 1794 half-cent in G/VG with a virtually blank reverse, you get the picture.

luckily, grading is just an opinion.

ps: i didn't buy anything from you. when i tried to ask about 1 of your items (some time ago), you were rude. maybe it was just a bad day

I read Karl's original post before editing, and I didn't feel he was saying anything out of malice. Sure, his comments were negative about Ernie, but if he had honest negative things to say, shouldn't he say it?

Here's a better F-15 than that, but it'll cost you a teeny bit more (they're in demand these days, y'know)...

  • Howdy. Coincidentally, this quarter was the first coin we sold yesterday, at $225 (our asking price was $230). That'll give you a good idea of what such a coin goes for. Oh, and I did forget to mention in the previous post that the coin was in fact net-graded (by us) to VF-20 due to the rim bumps. It really has VF-30 details.

It's not to late to make it to the Soaring Eagle show - see you there!
