Coins That Should Be Melted And Rid From This World

This might arose some anger, but I don't give. I'm tired of posts with 100 pics of these 'toned monsters'

1. Franklin Half Dollars (or 'frankies' as you cool cats (a la Lucy) call 'em)- FBL my ass, I don't care how many bell lines you got, the coin still sucks
2. This isn't a coin, but that 'frankie' comment reminded me of this:: Lucy's whole 50's gig
3. Ikes- Hideous.
4. Roosevelt Dimes- I don't wanna see a beautiful toned 1979 dime; although, I did find a beaut in Seven Eleven's Give/Take a Penny Box!! (sarcasm....)
5. Peace Dollars- it looks like my cat took a crap on a picture of Miss Liberty and turned it into a coin
6. Morgan Dollars- I used to love these... until I realized this was the 'band wagon' of coins. For God's sake people, there are other types of coins to collect. I understand they are beautiful and relatively inexpensive, but please...

Feel free to be annoyed by this. Don't PM me with your inane comments. Why? Because I don't care about what you have to say.

  • O ya, I forgot:

Jefferson Nickels- Ugliest coin in existence.... "Look at this deep purple of a grape Jeff!!" Shut up! Oooooooh toning, cool. I'll get out a purple sharpie and make my pocket change look just as nice.

Yeah most of the coins you mentioned don't grab me either. Why do you care so much if others like them? At least they are staying away from the series you love.

I can't wait to see and read the torching you are going to get in a few minutes image I guess it is all relative, I am sure tens of thousands of non collectors would think you are a really lame nerd for collecting coins, taking the time to get all emotional about coins, and basically writing about coins at all!...I know my friends think I am.

  • Tyler-

Hahah, its soooo true. Almost no one knows I collect coins and for good reason. I don't want to be labeled a nerd for doing it. If you call me image conscious, you're right. But.... I bet my image is better than yours. Just kidding...

What the hell happened to the age when collecting coins and stamps was cool?!?!

  • You don't care what we have to say? Why should I care what you have to say? I certainly don't. I don't collect coins according to what others want to collect. I collect what I want to collect. Personally I got bored with blast white coins and started liking the unique individuality of toned coins. Do I expect others to like what I collect? Do I expect others to stop collecting their own defined taste? The answer to both, of course, is NO. Kinda defines what a collection is all about...is that not the hobby we are in?
I am sorry that you don't get it. Perhaps one day you will.

    most sincerely,
    Aaron

How can you bash Peace $s, but not have a bad comment about the ugliest coins out there - SBA dollars?

I agree that I don't care much for Roosevelts, but the rest you mention are OK, and Peace and Morgans are great.

    you post makes me laugh:

I collect coins that I like and I could care less what other people collect or like. You seem to be worried about what other people like and do.

I tell all my firends that I collect coins and they pretty much all call me a geek, so what? Some people are confident in the person that are and can take someone calling them a geek or whatever, I know I sure can.

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t have anything against any coins, except counterfeit pieces. Even those can be OK if they are counterfeits that were made at the time the real coins circulated and are marketed as such. My main concerns and criticisms are for grossly overpriced fad coins that turn into traps for inexperienced collectors. That stuff can do major damage to the hobby.

As for the Morgan Dollar, yes many date and mint mark combinations are very common; but where else can one purchase a large, impressive, Mint State 100 year old coin in the U.S. series for less than $50?
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Now that this is officially a modern bashing thread, I can throw my two cents worth
    into the insanity.

Perhaps we could more easily believe that the author's concern is more for the inter-
ests of the newbie if he ever commented on the myriad other ways that newbies get
    ripped off.

Fad coins are referred to but modern bashers have been slamming these coins for de-
cades! Certainly there was nothing "faddish" about moderns until recently but terms
like clad crap and modern junk go way back. The earliest threads on these boards con-
tain gems of wisdom about the dangers of buying this modern high production, well-
made, exists in bags, hoarded by unscrupulus shysters, etc etc junk( by the same au-
    thor).

So bash away, but don't forget..................

Here`s a few of many examples of why people collect Ikes, Peace, Morgans, and Jeffs. Not that you deserve a response but, for the sake of anyone that is new to the hobby and reads this thread. Not everyone thinks like you ( thank heavens for that ) or as short sighted.

Someone needs to take away that boys lighter, or in fact, all his "Weapons of Coin Destruction" (WCD), and his ability to produce WCD. He has shown a clear ability, intent, and desire to use WCD.

right mind could despise all those designs. Just for that I am going
    to get some more Franklins.

The ugliest U.S. coins, in order:

    1) SBA Dollar
    2) Ike Dollar
    3) Roosevelt Dime
    4) Sac Dollar
    5) Franklin Half

And the mint must have been completely devoid of creativity and artistic talent from 1892 - 1916. Three series with the same design??? (But then made up for it 1916.)

Well, melting coins would create a rarity, thus making the coins you hate more desirable... would it not?

Anyway, I still think your a knob.

    >>>And the mint must have been completely devoid of creativity and artistic talent from 1892 - 1916. Three series with the same design??? (But then made up for it 1916.)

I would add that the design you are referring to is considered by many to be one of the greatest designs ever in terms of fitness of use for commerce. Barber coins were "workhorse" coins, that is to say, they were heavily used. That's why there are relatively few of them, compared to the total produced regard-less of denomination, to be found in grades above very good. I encourage you to spend some time looking at well-worn Barber coins, au58. You might notice, as have I, that a high percentage of well-worn Barber coins will still boldly exhibit their features, seemingly in defiance of having passed through countless hands.

Is it talent to create a coin design that worked this well? I think so. As for "completely devoid of creativity and artistic talent from 1892-1916" we are in total disagreement, au58. I think the Barber design for the 1892-1916 dimes, quarters and halves is one the most beautiful designs ever.
