In the recent Bowers auction, they were nice enough to check out a coin for me & bid on it (for a fee). I now have a really nice 1861 O No Motto Seated Half in 5. No image, but it has a combination of a typical New Orleans strike (ie., weak strike on Miss Liberty's head & some weak stars), and virtually no contact marks on the coin.

It is an original coin. It has a combination of a prooflike look on the obverse, with album toning and cartwheel luster showing through. Colorwise, it has a burnt orange on the obverse rims and sea-blue on the reverse rims.

I'd also like to thank Frank Van Halen, who gave me an enthusiastic review of the coin right before he left Bowers.

Congratulations! The 1861-O half dollar is my favorite coin. Very romantic. So much history behind it. I have an example in a PCGS MS-62 holder. Please post a picture when you get a chance.
