please help: grade opinions on this bust quarter

1821 I like the middle hair and ear, but the clasp, drapery, eye, nose, mouth are weak. Overall grade? Any problems?

The coin is a VG so far as I'm concerned, but I have only bought one Bust quarter in the past couple of years because nearly all of them are overgraded.

I don't agree with the grade at all. My experience with the series is limited, but the image screams g/vg.

The coin would grade VG-10, in terms of detail, but it looks like it has been scrubbed. That's probably why Chucky didn't provide "blow-up" pictures in the listing. He apparently has them based on his discription. Why not just include them up in the initial listing?

"I CAN EMAIL BLOW-UP PHOTOS UPON REQUEST." You should request them, the pictures provided may be hiding damage at 9:00 on the obverse and in the letters on the reverse.

    VG in my opinion, but...

Is that not PVC damage on the reverse in the legend?

good rims both sides, but weak dentilation. evenly struc, nice full rev. motto, appears original enough to me. vg-10 at best. why do so many wacko's grade bust quarters so danged high? vf doesn't even enter the picture, imo

Here's a Bust quarter in NGC AU-58. This will give you an idea of what the design looks like with near Mint State sharpness.

Geez Bill, no wonder you didn't like my 1828 bust quarter this weekend. image Nice looking coin you have there.
As for the original post, I agree with numised, vg+, and scrubbed at one time.

Yup. VG10. Might have minor issues, but not a displeasing coin.

    "F/VF"? Hahahaha. *snort*

Bill Jones provided an excellent scan that I really like...nice coin and a great scan. Not to kick a dead horse, but... just pass on this one. A much better example will come your way.

I didn't post the picture of my coin to show any one up. One of the fundamental things that people need in order to learn to grade coins is a knowledge of how the coin looks in Mint State or close to it. That way you can better determine how much detail is missing, which is fundamental to grading.

  • Here is an 1825 Bust quarter, properly graded as VF-20 (netted slightly for a couple of rim bumps). The one on the ebay listing looks VG-ish to me.
