What is a PR Grade?

New to coin collecting and would like to know what a PR grading relates to. I have seen FIne, Very FIne, BU, and MS, but never PR.

What do it mean? Could not find this topic in the archive and know someone out there does.

To expand upon that, PR is usually seen with grading numbers that range from 60 to 70, but sometimes Proof coins are found in worn. condition. In that case you might see any grade applied to the piece from 1 to 70.

For example, it is generally accepted that all of the surviving 1895 dollars are Proofs. Therefore one that is worn down to VG could be grated PR-7, 8 or 10.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Hello and welcome to coin collecting.

PR stands for Proof. Proof coins generally are made for collectors and are not really intended to be placed in circulation. They have have a mirror-like surface to them and sharper detail than the coins released in circulation. This is a result of specially prepared and polished dies and blanks.

  • Hello ChodeLee!

If you take a look at the coins in my signature:

The left one is a proof Sacagawea, the right one is a Mint State (MS) Sacagawea.
  • Welcome to the boards!! What is your favorite series of coins?..........Ken
  • Proof coins are made especially for collectors by the US Mint. As mentioned before they are made differently than business strike coins intended for circulation. You can buy these coins directly from the mint they year they are made. 2003 state quarter proof sets are available now US Mint Web Site.
  • The Sheldon scale is the same for both proof coins and coins made for circulation: 1-70. Proof coins are created a little differently than non-proof coins with special mirrored blanks and multiple strikes in the presses. To differentiate between proofs and non-proofs, proofs are graded PR60-PR70 whereas non-proofs are graded MS60-MS70. For proofs, cameo or deep cameo is also noted as CAM and DCAM. The majority of all proofs made in the last 20 years or so should grade PR69DCAM.
