PCGS YN Essay Contest

Link

All YN's should enter! I entered in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and won Third Place in 1999. It was an awesome experience and helped me focus and work on my writing skills during High School. I know we have several YN's here on the boards, and I would encourage you to send in an essay.

Excellent! I'll hit up the school printer for a good copy of my history paper, and there it goes!

  • I will be writing a *NEW* essay so I will learn which is the point of the essay contest. Nothing wrong with other ways but it just seems half hearted to use a pre-writen paper. I repeat nothing wrong with it its just my opinion.

Klector- The last two coin papers I wrote (English/art, History/designs) were with three preconceived notions:
    1- I wanted a good grade
2- I wanted the paper to be published somewhere
3- I wanted to be able to have a paper good enough to submit to the contest.

The only thing about the contest which I didn't know was the length limit, thus I can only choose to submit one of two papers, my history one.

  • Well, just to let you know, if you write a paper for school involving coins, you get YN auction money for the ANA YN auction in August. So, if you can anyhow incorporate coins into your classwork, it's well worth it! And, then you can send in the papers for articles and contests...it saves work. Goodluck everyone in the contest!
  • Cool, I think I'll give it a try
  • Hey rd5425 how old are you?

    John,

You can get a lot more YN money if you submit it somewhere such as Your Newsletter... send it to a print magazine and watch the money roll in!

  • Ah, my first posting on these boards. I just want to encourage everyone who might be interested to enter the essay contest or forward the contest details to anybody eligible. It is the greatest thing in numismatics for high school kids. PCGS really does a class act with this competition. I entered in 1996, 1997, and 1998 and was fortunate to win $5,000 in the first year and then take home $500 for the following two years. Actually, the winners often aren't even numismatists, although I was at the time, and still am. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions about the contest.

  • Welcome Steve! Glad to see another professional numismatist here!

There are also other prospective benefits for entering the contest that may not be mentioned so go for it! Goodluck!

Hmm, my daughter just announced that her College of choice (Goucher) requires me to beg her to write a numismatic essay.

She is amused at the thought. I am not sure what that means. image

It's probably got something to do with her wanting a few hundred bucks and a lift to the mall image

This thread is absolutely terrific to read. Even the ever-so-slight, and light competition between our handful of YNs is stupendous!
I'm sure all here offer the best of wishes to all entrants. I hope you guys get some outside competition. Not that you aren't smart beyond your years, but you have had the advantage of being here with all us a dolts. image
