  • No. Those who slab any coin for the intention of gaining a profit and increasing the overall market should be questioned for their morality.

  • I like modern coins. I've been putting together a vf set of Statehood Quarters. Or I would if I could get them to wear down that much. And they're turning them out so fast that my pants are hanging to one side.

I was joking above... just to clarify... I have a few modern coins... I have 2 nice modern lincolns, a nice washingtons, and a nice franklin.

I tried to sell them a while back, but the coins look so flawless that I can't bear to part with them.... wierd.

  • One of my local dealers asks me "why do you bother with that new stuff?". I look in his case and point out a nice mint state anything classic and remind him that someone collected it when it was a "modern" and probably at face value tooimage

Do I expect the moderns that I stash to reap me a monetary reward - no not really. Maybe my Grandchildren? Who knows but someone has to do it or there may not be any.

MS70/Pr70 - cant afford them now and may not be able to in my lifetime - so what - I have some coins that I enjoy and that I hope some future collectors will be glad that so many people set aside nice examples of

  • Lucille,

When I was growing up we used big thick rubber bands. They were so strong you had to use a special tool to stretch them out. It takes a little longer, but it's so much more humane.image

Collecting moderns is one thing. Collecting certified hi-grade slabbed moderns........kind of funny. image Wait, wait. Collecting certified hi-grade slabbed moderns, and then crying to the board after each submission that the "lock" pf/69 d/cam, super cameo, ultra proof didn't get the proper designation, or came back as "only" a 68. Now THAT'S funny. image No wait. Collecting certified hi-grade slabbed moderns and then crying when the "investment" isn't panning out. image
    Okay, commence with the neutering.......image

    I love moderns.
I can't believe what people are willing to pay me for them.
I just don't ever want to buy them back.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

I think that they are neutering themselves if they are spending big money.

Okay, most moderns can't compare with a nice Draped Bust coin, or a nice Chain cent. Still you can put together gem sets of most moderns without it costing a ton. And some of the MS69 moderns are going to stay low pop coins. Granted 68 state quarters are plentiful and cheap (a lot of the dates), but that just means you can have a superb coin for a low price.
