Which would you rather have???

Just curious as to what the opinions are as to which one of these two coins you would rather have. An 1836 au gobrecht or an au small eagle dollar, both are worth roughly the same amount, so with that not being a factor, which one would you rather have, why or why not?

I have both, but this is still a hard choice. I really like early coins most of all, but the Gobrecht has a lot of history. It's the origin of the Liberty Seated design, and the Flying eagle on the reverse was the origin of the Flying Eagle cent and the inspiration for St. Gaudens' flying eagle on the $20 gold piece. The Gobrecht flying ealge is also considered to be one of the most beautiful of all U.S. designs.

I guess it's choose the Gobrecht Dollar because I have the small eagle design on a half dime, dime and quarter, but this is not an easy choice.

That would be a very tough choice as both coins are highly desirable. I really love the Seated Liberty Coins the most, but I consider the Gobrecht dollar a pattern, not intended for general circulation, so I would vote for the Bust Dollar, small eagle.

I'd take the Gobrecht, they are harder to find and rarer, besides,i already have seven small eagles and NO gobrechts.

  • Thanks for your opinions, I am leaning more tword the Gobrecht, I guess my thought is the early dollars have surged so much in price lately that the may be overvalued and may seetle back to some degree at some point in time, but then again they may keep going up, who knows, where as the Gobrecht has seen little if any price increase as of yet, and has a very stable pricing history it appears to me, not quite as specualtive, this is just my opinion. I think seated dollars will increase in the future when and if that happens the Gobrechts should as well.

Gobrect Dollars have gotten expensive too. I've heard of prices like $5,000 for pieces in VG. If that's true its seems hard to believe that MS-60s are worth less than $10K as it says on the Gray Sheet.
