I'm sorry that Congress authorized another $10 gold piece. It will raise the price of the set and probably not be great buy since 100,000 coins is proably too many.

I thought that Congress had learned its lesson from the 1984 Olympics. The $5 gold coin seems like the ideal size for a gold commemorative piece.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • You are right about the price Bill but I like a larger denom piece thrown into the mix every now and then. It provides a little variety. This only the 3rd $10 denom gold coin in some 20 years.

  • It must be my dusty eyes, all those designs look subpar to me.

Look at what our neighbor can do, not just the designs of the coins, but also the website:

    RCM

Where are the artistry and creativity in those coins?

Uh... aside from the 82-D Washington and the 93-W Madison, all modern commemorative half dollars have been clad. It's not particularly novel.

My idea -- if they're going to make the halves clad anyway, why not go all out and make them a circulating commemorative. They could mint them instead of the JFK half.

Because of my love of aviation, I'll buy a set or two. It will not purchase these things for the artistry involved. If I wasn't an aviation fan, I'd ignore these things like they were the Capital Visitor's Center coins.

    Flaminio -

The Bill of Rights half dollar was a 90% silver coin. That was refreshing change.

Yes, indeed -- that's the one I referred to above as the 93-W Madison. Same beastie.

I have been patiently waiting for months to see what the designs were going to look like. I can honestly say I am more than disappointed. They look like a state quarter that didn't make the finals. I may not buy one, still on the fence with this one..
