Mercury dime collectors what's your opinion on this one?

darktonedarktone Posts: 8,437 ✭✭✭
I have had this coin for a few years and I had it certified by ANACS during a time period when I felt they were under grading. Let me know your opinion on the coins grade and I will decide whether to crack it out and resubmit it. I will let you in on the ANACS grade after I have heard from you so it does not sway your opinion. Thanks mike image

Is this coin a proof? I think the contact mark in front of the face keeps it from going better than a 65

      • I was wondering if I was the only one to think this might be a proof. Is that a mark in front of the chin or something on the holder? I'd say 64 if it is a mark, 65 otherwise.

Thanks everyone for taking a look. I am sorry I forgot to tell you it was a proof. The mark in front of liberty is a tiny mark that seems to have really reflected a lot of light but it is a mark. The coin is in ANACS certified proof 64 holder. I think it's got a shot at a higher grade. It also has some really nice streaky blue toning around the periphery. mike image

I think because of the mark it won't even 64 at PCGS. I know I wouldn't even buy a proof with a mark on it unless it was a rare issue, which 1942 isn't.

Jon, thanks I don't really collect these coins so your opinion is really apreciated. mike image
      • I do collect proof mercuries. I agree with dimeman, not rare and any mark will kill the grade. Does appear to have the correct toning I like.

I knew it was a proof, thats why I said 66, and not MS or FB. On proof Mercs , it is assumed that it
        is FB.
Darktone: There is not question that this coin is a shot 66, on a bad day its a 65. Excellent
coin. If you paid less than $250 , you did exceedingly well. Congradulations.

I agree with Brian,if they grade the proofs the same as business strikes.Al
      • Mark is distracting but it should go 65.

Proofs are graded differently than MS. A mark like this would probably keep it under 63 at PCGS. Proofs usually have no marks and only hairlines or lack of them determine the grade.

There's a contact mark on the face & something near the chin, along with what appears to be chatter or hairlines at 5:00 on the reverse. It's a nice coin, but save your $; this won't go higher than 4 on a good day. The problem is that the mark near the chin draws the viewer's attention & the mark on the face is in a grade sensitive area.

Please also consider strike and luster. Total fixation on minor contact marks is not an overall
        grade.

      • Not all proofs are full band. My new blue Merc doesn't have full bands.
      • wingedlibertywingedliberty Posts: 4,805 ✭✭✭
It is true that some proof Mercs are not full bands, but 99% are.
This particular coin has exception strike and luster which compensate for the minor contact marks.
The overall eye appeal in mind give it a 66.

        Ken,

Thanks for the kind words. I personnaly wouldn't spend the money to grade this dime. I would wait and find one I like already in a PCGS holder in the grade I want. 42's are all over the place. I'm not knocking the coin, just wouldn't spend the money on it.
