My new Ike - 1978 - S. Any other Ikes out there? Feel free to show them.

Just got this in the mail yesterday from DLRC. A PR69DCAM that has a tan. Add your Ike to the thread if you like.

I am glad this thread started, I've wanted to ask you Ike guys a question. Went to a show a few weeks back and saw a number of proof Ikes. And for some reason I was looking at them more than I usually do.

What struck me is how most of the slabbed ones where very splotchy and hazed. To a point that I would have thought the grades would be lower. These were high grade slabbed Ikes and they looked like heck. Not like the one that starts this thread.

My question, do they turn in the slab? Is the hazing and splotching discounted in the grading of modern proofs. What? image I am interested to know.

    Carl:
Blotchy spots and haze are a significant factor in grading proofs. It is especially the case with a coin that is large like an Ike, that is why I have touting them so much in high grade. They are very tough haze free due to improper storage and attrition. Excellent question.

  • Clank,
The hazing is a common problem on Ikes. Hazing with regard to my experience is more prevalent on the earlier Ikes. Also what I call field frost is a common condition. These are tiny pinpoint sized bumps in the fields. As long as the fields are deep and mostly clear, strong strike, and minimal frost breaks it is my opinion that Ikes get more of a grading break than other coins. I know many will disagree but I have seen some terrible looking IMHO PR69DC Ikes in the two major grading company slabs.

I don't think they get a break, but are graded objectively on the basis of the fact that they have very exposed fields and tremendous vulnerability in those areas. Its a very large coin afterall!image
As you know, larger coins are graded differently than smaller ones.

WWW - Wonder if lucy would like that one you have?image

wingedliberty - Thanksimage In person, it has an even coffee brown tone on both sides. It isn`t distracting at all, if anything, it adds character to it. The frost on it virtually unbroken which is a nice bonus as well.image This one I consider a keeper.image
