Just won this on Yahoo. What is your thoughts on this? Is NTC good at telling AT coins from real toning?

    Nice coin image

Was looking over your web page...and was wondering if you scan your coins or use a camera?

    Good stuff...
    I love coins...image
  • I use a camera. I have an Olympus C4000 zoom.

    I love toned coins!

Columbians aren't usually found with toning like that, so the coin raises red flags right off the bat to me. That holder us useless, although it may protect the coin during shipping. image I'm on the fence with the coin.

NTC says it's genuine, but they may only be refering to the coin itself image

Yep, NTC says it is genuine - it looks like a Columbian to me as well.

Whomever submitted this coin did not have it graded, so who knows what they thought of the toning?

Looks cool, but haven't seen any as cool as the painted one you got for $35 - still love the reverse on that one.

Do you care if I use the reverse picture for my icon?
  • I like the colors on the coin but have no idea if original.

What I really want to know is what light set up you use to take your photos?????
  • I was hoping to have a few more opinions on this so I am going to image this thread for the weekend people.

The coin is very similar to the coins I have below. They are probably AT but are pretty.

The coin looks AT to me, but that's just a first blush look. I'd have to see other pics or see it in person to make sure.

Columbians do come with nice toning. Here's one I bought years ago.

The red spots are from the indicator on the camera, not on the coin.

The coin has a polished look and clearly has been artificially retoned. Your three coins may be pretty but they're virtually worthless thanks to the fake color. If you're trying to put together a meaningful collection you'll be far better off taking the money you might spend on such novelties and putting them towards a real coin that might actually have some value.

But as long as you're having fun.....

    Lori,

To put it bluntly, NTC is not good at anything.

As to the toning on the coin, I really don't know if it's real or not since I'm still completely confused on this issue of AT versus real - but, I also think some graders at PCGS are confused, (or scared), themselves.

I have one that has some nice toning that the members here seemed to think is real. Perhaps a comparison would help:

  • I post this one an most thought it was AT.

This picture shows the colors better

ANACS said this about it: ANACS AU Details - NET EF 45 Cleaned. Nothing about AT.

So all together I am confused with the AT issue on these. I am getting better on Morgans I think.

  • Don't feel bad about the coinfusion. As long as you like the coins, that's what matters. I think the first one is definitely a nice looking coin, AT or not.

Get toned coins because you like them. Not all of them will be market acceptible, though. I think your newest one may not be market acceptible. I'm 70% sure of it. As for your one with a peripheral tone, the coin was cleaned and then retoned in an album.

Nice appearance, regardless if it's AT or not. I don't think it much matters based on the value of the coin as a slider, as long as you like it. The high mintage means you could end up with an awful lot of them, every one looking different, though. Also, don't EVER expect NTC to do you any good - I don't think they're good at telling anything. I've seen and returned their work. Don't get sucked in, because some are MUCH, MUCH worse than others and it could get very costly.

Over the years, I've seen a good number of very nicely toned, unquestionably original, PCGS ms61 and ms62's in green label slabs for under $25, just keep looking. Usually they were in the low priced boxes at coin show tables. Some (or many?) may now be ms63 or better at some other service, however.

  • Here is an update. I took my own pictures. Is it possible it could be real toning? Is it worth trying to cross it to PCGS?

PS. I never edit the colors in my pictures. I just crop them.

I don't know, Lori, it just doesn't "look" right to me. Too much of the same color covering both the devices and the fields. But, I could be dead wrong and actually hope that I am.

It looks like the colors crawl over the devices and rim. I'm thinking it will not be considered market acceptible.
  • I've seen a lot of album toned Columbians, but not rainbow "bag type" toned ones.
  • I am just puzzled buy this a bit because I have seen a lot of AT ones on ebay and those "doctors" AT both sides of the coin. This one has a very nice rev. Natural color like one I have graded from NGC. It looks like a very good strike. I think it is possible this is real toning and I think I will send this one to PCGS to see what they think.

If I do can I send it in the slab and tell them not to crack it if it will not grade with their service?

HMM...that's a good question. Normally, you'd just use crossover and if it wasn't going to make the same grade, it would come back in the original holder. But, this coin isn't actually graded. I wonder how PCGS would handle that?

    Russ, NCNE

  • Just called PCGS and this is what they told me:

I can send it in slabbed but it would be cracked out and submitted raw to graders because there is no grade on the slab. They suggested I take it to a dealer or show and see what they would say.

To bad there is no shows around me that will have PCGS graders there to get an opinion.

Guess I will just keep it in the NTC slab for now.

I wonder if they would crack it out if you sent it as cross at any grade - if they are going to bodybag, they do not break out - I think I heard once?
  • I'd crack it out of the NTC any way. Go get yourself a nice air-tite to put it in. If anything, the NTC slab detracts from the coin.
  • It does not have a grade on the slab so they would have to take it out of the slab and submit it like a raw coin she told me. I asked it they could keep it in the slab. I am afraid that if they take it out it will come back at and unslabbed again. I would rather it stay protected in the slab it is in if it would not cross.

    Lori
  • Lori..I think my point is that you seem to be fixated on having every single coin in a slab...ANY slab. If you don't send this coin to PCGS, NGC, or ANACS...I still say you should crack it out and put it in a different holder...whether it be an Air-Tite, a Capital plastic holder, or any of the other really good holders out there. If you do send it in and it gets slabbed, you win. If you send it in and it doesn't grade, then go back to option one.

Now I have both slabbed and raw toned coins. I personally wouldn't keep any one I got in an NTC slab...I'd rather have it elsewhere. But then...that's the great thing about collecting...freedom of choice.

Good luck....I looked at your web site...you got some pretty dollars over there.
  • Lori
Thanks for posting additional pics. If the luster is the same on both sides, there's a chance it'll get graded. However, if the luster on the obverse is more subdued than on the reverse, it'll bb due to AT or cleaning.
