Question about toning

This applies to both AT and natural.
Let's say you buy a coin above premium because of its beautiful rainbow toing.
The toning slowly changes, and a few years later, it looks crappy.
What would you do?

Comments

  • Learn a lesson that toning can change over time. There isn't much to do to change it back. You could dip the coin and get rid of the toning or sell, but you would probably get less $ since the toning is not as appealing as it was before.

dip it and hope the toning has not eaten into the surface. Then enjoy your white coin.
  • Go back in a time machine and not buy it. Or else you could just deal with it because u cant sell it for a premium anymore chalk it up to education.

    My point exactly.
Toning changes over time. That's why I can't understand people paying an arm and a leg for something
that they know will change (or maybe they don't know?).

    ER,

Don't assume that ALL toning changes over time.

When a coin is isolated from the source of the original toning, and is no longer exposed to other elements that foster toning, the process usually stops. I've owned many beautifully toned Morgans that have not changed a bit in the last 20+ years.

I tend to agree with gsaguy on this...toning will mostlikey not change if the source of the toning is removed. The REAL issue is to prevent environmental damage to the coin and how the coin is stored over time is critical. Store your coins properly for the long term to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
