And how would you grade it?

looks washed out. I'd say it would come back cleaned for sure.
  • concur...based on the picture...harsh cleaning.

Instant body bag. Save your money. It's not worth sending in.

    Send it to ANACS.

Please give me your opinion on grade, also. BTW, in case anyone was wondering why I'm asking about an obviously cleaned coin, it's not an authenticity issue. There's more to the story, which I'll get to later, after some more responses.

VF-20 sharpness. Net grade could be as low as VG because the surfaces look porus.

Seems to be a lull in responses, so here's the rest of the story...

The coin actually looks better than the pic. I purposely flattened detail with some Photoshop finagling, so there would be no question that it was cleaned. The coin is obviously cleaned, but has EF-40 detail.
    Here's the bottom line:

Here's a coin, which if it weren't for the pedigree, never would have been slabbed by PCGS (even though it's one of the key dates). How do they justify it? By knocking it down in grade a bit. Doesn't seem right, does it?

Interesting... very interesting. The coin is clearly not original and is worthy of a body bag. I'm sorry...but I call it the way I see it.

  • Barry -

First, let me say that your big eye-ball freaks me out.

Second, just out of curiousity, I looked up the coin in the Eliasberg catalog and heres what the B&M cataloger said back in 1996:

VF-20. Light gray toning. Old scratches in the field are mostly hidden by toning. Rare in all grades.

Funny, I don't see any toning in your photo, but I note that the plate photo in 1996 looks to be a fairly darkly toned coin. I'd almost guess the coin was cleaned since 1996, though I can't believe someone would think that was a good idea.

Based on what you posted, you're suggesting that PCGS knew the pedigree when determining the grade. If thats true, maybe the grader looked it up in the catalog, saw what it was called back then and based his determination partly on that. Or maybe not.

    Good post.

    Singapore,
This coin has been (over)dipped. No toning at all. So your saying the coin was sold raw, then dipped, then slabbed by PCGS with the pedigree? Interesting... I don't think the grader necessarily looked it up in the catalog, but must have known the pedigree, otherwise it would have been body bagged.

Regarding the eyeball, when I signed up for the forum, that icon was already up in the list. I'm an ophthalmologist, so I thought it was the perfect choice image
  • This reminds me of the IH Showdown, a lot of dipped copper that you and I would get BBagged!

Excuse my ignorance, but is this coin so unique that the pedigree would be known even if raw?

How do you suppose the pedigree was verified after the coin went from "VF-20 w/light gray toning" to what it is now?

  • The "finalizer" on that coin has just been transfered to.............................Accugrade!

BTW......the "dipper" better stay away from my Barber half! (below) He might try to improve it also............NOT!

I suppose that if your one (or was) of the "big dogs" in the coin world, you can get PCGS to put anything in a slab.

I can't even get them to grade a bust half correctly.
  • BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,317 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is not the first time that I have seen an Eliasberg coin get a higher grade that it deserved. The others I have seen just overgraded; they were not body bag candidates.

Yes, there are those who will pay more for the pedigree, but why is it necessary to overgrade the coin so that it can realize a higher price? And why is it that a coin that would normally not be graded get graded because of who owned it years ago?

In my opinion, when the Eliasberg coins were auctioned off, PCGS and NGC got into a contest to get them in their holders and graded MANY coins a minimum of a point higher than they otherwise would have. I have seen some examples where the grades were two or three points higher than they should have been. I am not alone in my thoughts on this matter. I think it is a shame.

Also, I am certain that in many cases, PCGS and NGC knew the pedigrees of the coins.

I can't believe that thing is in a holder.

If I sent it in I am positive it would be returned in a body bag.
