Are Half Dollars the strongest denomination in US coin collecting?

Despite how little the half dollar circulates, there seems to be a ton of different series and varieties to choose from to
collect. From a Flowing Hair to JFKs to early commems. The Half dollar sure has alot to offer for the average US coin collector.

A silver dollar and how many friends??? The 1915-S Pan Pac $50 "slugs" would take 'em all.
Actually, considering diversity for the collector, I think quarters have it. Commems are cool too. (oh, yea. A lot of them are halves.)

I,m saying if you listed every series, design, date, variety,et al that would be one long list.

Except for Mint State Franklins and Kennedys. Those coins you should avoid like the plague. Yessiree Bob. That's sure what I would do. mdwoods

I completely agree. The only thing uglier than a MS Kennedy is a MS Frankie, or a proof Frankie, or a circulated Frankie.

Even though I love halves and quarters, I recall hearing that dimes were the most popular collectable sets.

  • Now bear in mind that only a few people ever bother with halves. It is usually best to leave it to them because there are so many other cool series to collect.

I would say classic type halves are weak right now. Lately with the surge in prices among modern (post 1900) coinage, I decided to look backwards and pick up a few key and semi-key type coins. Four of them have been half dollars at a much better value (IMHO) that what you get in the modern coins for the same $$$$.

Halves are far superior to the overbearing silver dollar! They are still big enough to have a lot of detail and heft, but are more like a piece of art over their clumsy, overweight silver dollar sisters! image

Seriously people, all the coins mentioned are great, but which denomination do most

people collect. I am not sure if any recent accurate surveys have been done. Personally I feel

not too many people collect Bust Dimes or Liberty Seated Dimes or Flowing hair dimes.

Beautiful as they are. For classical coins at least, Quarters and Half Dollars seem to be equally

popular. They are relatively large, great variety, good range of grades and are generally easy

to sell or auction. Morgan Dollars are probably equally popular because of their beauty, toning,

Prooflike qualities and generally reasonable price. Large cents and Classical Cents are probably a little

more popular then dimes. I have no idea where classical nickels would fall, but I do like the

Rays five Cent piece very much.

I've had wheats in my blood since I was a kid, thanks to my grandfather. That has evolved to high grade Lincoln Wheat Proofs. I don't think I could ever get away from them. Second, comes quite a string of morgans by VAM, and Washingon Silver Quarter varieties. I have dabbled in between with Roosevelt dimes, but I see this as a passing fancy. Right now, I'm working up a high grade set of key and semi-key classic type coins. But no matter how much I move around, the wheat proofs have me hooked, and just feel like home to me.

Your right, I really miss the old wheat back cents. Still have a matched color set in XF-AU

from 1941 and continued the set till about 1969. Its not worth a whole lot, but it sure gave

me a lot of hours worth of pleasure.

Thanks bear, nostalgic value plays an important role in my collection. I've had a red book since I was ten. I know a guy who is bulding a collection and if a coin is in the red book, he wants it!

Pure slab collectors have their own thing, whatever that is . . . .

In U.S. coins silver dollars and cents rule. Everything else, on the whole, plays second fiddle. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
