I have recently been trying to get the grading of these coins figured out good enough to buy them raw so this is good practice for me. My grade is AU53. mike
I'd say somewhere around EF-45 to AU-50. The wear on the cheek is obvious.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Been collecting Indians for years. The coin shows the high wire rim from 11 o'clock to 4 o'clock on the obverse, a key diagnostic for this date. This date is known for having a decent strike compared to some other dates in this series. I would grade this coin AU53.

I'd love to hear from the gold guys/gals on this one, too.

Assuming they get past the authenticity tests (which with gold coins that is not always a given) I'd say Au-55/Au-58
