Delima, should i pass on a great coin, if i shouldn't be buying anything right now?

At the large coin show in my area last weekend i saw the nicest 64 red large cent i've ever seen at a dealers table, he happened to have written pq on a piece of tape he put on the holder and when a dealer does that it usually means he wants to jack up the price. I asked him how much and he said 1300 bucks! Wow, 1300 for an 1855 in 64 red ? Being out of work has its drawbacks, like seeing a coin like this with new lincoln penny luster and as clean as it could possibly be in a 64 holder, so if i don't think i've ever seen one with better eye appeal in a 64 holder should i ; A. pass on it because i'm out of work and my financial future is uncertain, B. pass on it because he's asking at least 200 more than even a pq piece is worth, or C. buy it if i think i'm not likely to see a better one in a 64 holder.

Your opionions would be appreciated because i know this coin is still for sale? Les

  • don't do it if you are financially strapped. Sell some other coins if you really want it, but don't go into debt buying coins. Remember you cann't take them with you.

Buy red copper if you have to. I'd just as soon have pieces with a rich brown color or an R&B coin. Red copper can change on you in an instant.

Coins are less important than eating especially when the coin in question is no great rarity. This is especially true of a Mint State large cent from the 1850s, which is actually pretty easy to find.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • A completely agree with Mr. Jones. And I also would rather have a RB over a RD or atleast if i was going to keep it for any significant amount of time.

According to Scott Travers and other dealers I have talked to, many copper coins have been doctored to restore the red color. These same dealers claim that too many have gotten through the certifying services screens (of course the services deny it). And, thinking about it, how could a copper coin from 1855 stay red. Copper quickly loses its red color when exposed to the air, and there were no slabs or other holders back in 1855. So my sense is that I would rather pay less and get a nice RB or BN piece. Since you are out of work, no point in paying up right now to buy something that might not even be original. Just my thoughts.

I agree with most here--the right thing to do is take a pass.

I will go against and say Buy it,

Figure out how to pay for it later, Find another job or something. If its a good deal, you can always sell it ?

  • Well I had a dilema a little while ago. I bought my dream car and was totally strapped. A couple of coins came my way that I had been looking to buy for over a year. But I passed. The money would have just really put me in a hole. I was upset for awhile. But then I realized that I had waited a year anyway. They will come along again. I really feel alot better now about not getting into the extra debt.

IndianHeadMan - I saw some of barberlover stuff last weekend - I was impressed -

"remember you can't take it with you" ? Les said he was going to be buried with his favorite barber, so I take it to mean he plans on taking at least that one with him.

Does anyone else plan on being buried with their favorite coin? maybe this deserves its own thread - and would it start a new rash of grave robberies?

Hey maybe PCGS can start selling caskets that has capacity for 200 PCGS slabs (and one body).

You'll run out of money long before you run out of deals. If the conditions aren't right, don't buy the coin.

Very well said, GSAGuy. I can't tell you how many coins I've gone for because I felt I shouldn't pass up the opportunity. I am now learning that I have that same dilemma on, at least, a monthly basis. Trust me, you'll see another deal when you are ready to buy it.

o.k., i get the message, my wife said i should pass on it to.

By the way, i saw the last coin i had to sell to raise cash resold the same day, but it took several hours to sell, i consider that an insult Laura, didn't the buyer know that i liked that 76 seated quarter and they actuqally took a couple hours to buy it!!! I think thats about the longest its taken for one of my coins to sell recently, well i'm sure they'll love it even more when they see it in person. Les

If the coin is truly the nicest 64++ coin you've ever run across, it would likely be worth in the $1200-1500 and could easily be a 65 one day or a 64 the next if slabbed. Grading and pricing is on a continuum and the nicest of 64's are worth just a shade less than the worst of the 65's. Regardless of the color of the coin, I would always prefer to have the PQ+ at more money, as long as it's not a burial price-wise.

I sold this one on eBay for another dealer, back in 2000. Saw it again at the 2002 FUN show, with a pricetag almost 50% higher than what we'd sold it for. Small world.

"Red copper can change on you in an instant."

Yeah, just because it's been red for 150 years doesn't mean anything. Vinny, at the local flea market knew a guy who told him that he
once read in a book that the author had heard that one of those red cents turned brown after the guy dropped it in the toilet. (He liked to
look at his coins while he sat on the throne....said it was one of the few places he could get some peace and quiet....and he said the light
    was pretty good in there.)

"You'll run out of money long before you run out of deals. If the conditions aren't right, don't buy the coin.

    GSAGUY"

Did GSAGUY PM you enquiring about who had that cent?

Watch him...he's a sneaky one. He's not satisfied with both the finest and second finest sets of Toned Monster Morgans. Oh, no.

He's got dreams. "GSA "Eliasberg" Guy"......he keeps hearin' it......it taunts him.

  • Barberlover.........you'll never be tormented by a monster coin you BOUGHT! However, ......years from now the remorse will still be there for that special coin that got away. Of this i know firsthand!

A little higher than you "think" it should be? Years from now you won't remember that! Monsters aren't ever cheap, as a well known "snake" has reiterated often! Be thankful that coin isn't a nice monster Morgan.....where the premium for "Monsterdom" is often 10X sheet!

Beg, borrow, or steal (well, let's forget about that one)......you get the point. Make payment arrangements, .....sell off a lesser coin easier to replace later. Get a part time 2nd job......whatever it takes. But if it's "reasonably" attainable then go get it done!

An exceptionally nice type coin. IF you could re-sell it easily for the same price or more that you paid within a day of buying it then why not? You could enjoy it for a few days or weeks and move it for the cash...if it would sell for what you paid.
