Does anyone know when NGC started

using the CA(cameo) designation on ots proof coins? The reason I ask is I have a 1902 Proof 63 Barber Quarter that is in an NGC slab but it is not designated CA, but it definately is a cameo.
Also, is there any way that I can find out exactly when this coin was slabbed?
Thanks for any help, Jim

P.S., should I change my avatar? I PM'ed gcoins and have not received any response, is it because I'm a newbie?

I can't tell you when they started using the CA designator but if you can answer a few questions about the slab I can tell you approximitely when it was slabbed.

Is the insert black? Sept - Nov 1987

is the insert white with plain white label and no hologram? Nov 87

Does label have border and scales under print, no hologram? Dec 87 - late? 89

Does label has no barcode but does have hologram? Late? 89 - mid 92

Does label have barcode, hologram, but no dividing groove in insert below label? Mid 92 - ? in 97

Does label have barcode, dividing groove in insert, and hologram is nearly full width of slab? Very briefly in 97

Is it the same as the last one but the hologram is only half the width of the slab? ? in 97 - July 2000 and Sept 2000 - July 2001

Is the serial number in tiny digits below the bar code? Aug 2000

Is the bottom border of the label thicker than the others and has the company name on it? July 01 - date

Thank you Conder, this is the one:

I also received info from NGC explaining when they started using the "CA" designation for silver proof coins. But, alas, that still doesn't explain why my 1902 Proof 63 Barber Quarter wasn't designated "Cameo".

Cameron- conder101 has given useful info regarding the old NGC slab I owe you from our last trade (haven't shipped it yet, but will do so before I leave for the show). Sounds like it's a 1987-89 slab, based on his info. No hologram or bar code, as I recall.

Cameron, when the SHOW comes to Chicago, I'll take it to the NGC table (or maybe I'll just take it to Harlan Berk the next time I'm downtown). Trust me, this is a Cameo, my scanner just refuses to pick it up without reflecting back.
by the way, anyone else going to the Chicago SHOW?

The fields don't look deep and black enough to make a cameo contrast to acheive a cameo designation.

When did they say they started using the CA designation?

Conder, this is the response I recieved from Davis Lange:

"The CAMEO designation was applied only to gold proofs and modern proofs until about five years ago, when it was extended to all proof coins of the brilliant style finish. Your coin may have been certified before that time. You may submit it in the holder under our Designation Review service at $10 to see whether it will CAMEO."

Well from Lange's answer it sounds like your coin may have been slabbed during the first year or so that they were using that slab type. That would be more than five years ago.
