Why do people try and cross their coins to PCGS?

I see all these people complaining about thier coins that didn't cross to PCGS and i ask why do you even try? Is it for the registry set, if so why not join the NGC reg. set it allows both PCGS and NGC. Is it because PCGS coins sell for more, most people i know buy the coin not the slab so it doesn't matter what the plastic says. Is it because PCGS plastic looks better, why not send to SEGS or ICG they have clear plastic too and Segs even has the top label. So i ask why do people spend money on crossing when they could use that money to buy more coins?

I don't think that that should be an overriding consideration, but I think a lot of people do. Personally, I try to buy the coin and not the slab but if I'm shopping ebay and both the NGC and PCGS scans are good, I'll tend to go for the PCGS. (Been disappointed a few times but not seriously so!) And I've NEVER SOLD A COIN (sorry for yelling...) BUT, if I do someday decide to sell some of my duplicates or victims of upgrades, on balance I'd rather be selling a PCGS than any other slab. (again ceteris paribus).
Just MHO.

the question makes no sense. people do not try to cross their coins to pcgs, they try to cross their SLABS to pcgs.

Buy the coin not the slab.
I guess its also like cars or anything else. You get used to a brand that you like and stick with it.

In the past, I have purchased coins outside of my primary interest. Most times, it was because what I wanted was unavailable, or not to my liking. Why purchase you say. Well, it's a peculiarity of mine. Since I am a variety hunter, I usually take up a dealer's time, and, I feel an obligation to at least make some purchase -- sort of a quid pro quo, in hopes that said dealer will not object when I want to peruse his or her inventory.
Anyway, those obligatory coins are the ones I usually part with. I don't think I am the only collector who uses PCGS simply out of preference. It ISN'T always about money.
2. Some people want their collections to look uniform. They want all the coins in the same brand of holders, sometimes even in holders with the same color labels.
3. Registry requirements.
As far as why people try the cross game.......$$$$$ and Registry Sets.
that's why i try to avoid coins in PCGS slabs. i think the grading at NGC and ANACS and others is on par. why not get the same coin at a discount?

If they were on par the price would be comparable! People can say what they want but the $ tell the story!
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

ahh - attacking my economics side i see. PCGS would command higher prices if:
1. Their standards were higher.
2. There is a pre-conceived notion that PCGS's standards are higher.
3. Miscellaneous non-coin attributes such as holder type, size, turnaround time, customer service etc.
Focusing on #2. From the coins I have that are in holders I would say ANACS is the toughest grader, yet they're considered below PCGS and NGC - so I'll always look for ANACS first. Pro-PCGS statements are abundant and I think it shows in their prices. Everytime someone makes a positive statement about PCGS, whether founded or not, their credibility rises in the market. So you're paying into hype somewhat, but the coins are the same.
I compare it to a story I saw on the news a long time ago. Starkist tuna was buying cans of generic tuna and simply putting their own label over the generic label. This was perfectly legal, and some were complaining about the justification for the higher price.
Starkist didn't need to justify a higher price - people were paying for their name without a notion of the quality
