I wonder if Mr. homerunhall anticipated......

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
The migration of so many forum members to other sites, most notably, across the street?
The anger and resentment of so many?
The martyrdom and cult following of Greg?
The new tone on this forum?
The posts in defense of his (Mr. Hall's) actions?
The infighting among forum members?

I also wonder how much he really cares about this stuff in the grand scheme of things?

Your thoughts on this?

PS - Mr. Hall is not allowed to reply - this is MY thread!image

  • I'm sure he cares. It's his customer base. IT's the minimum submission that has really frustrated me.
  • I doubt he really cares until/if it effects the bottom line. He will certainly never admit to having hit himself in the crotch

    Probably not, but others may.

My thoughts - it showed me a little more about people's personalities. There doesn't have to be infighting - the point(s) have been made, the actions as a direct result of the action have been taken, and everyone should let it go. That is not to say there won't be more fallout, like even more disinterest in this forum.

I will not abandon the forum as a form of protest because I realize I don't know what really happened, but, my motivation is low. And if it isn't clear, I really didn't like the negativity that was/is being heaped upon those of us who choose to try and still utilize this forum, so it keeps me from being an active participant in the NGC forum. In all honesty, it has left a bad taste in my mouth -- but I also know I don't want to pursue my interests in a vacuum, but I refuse to be caught up in a whirlwind of someone else's choosing.

    I'm in the "re-evaluating" phase.

Since HRH is not allowed to answer, I will.

The Forum is not a profit center, and I don't think HRH cares. He has always tended to look at things primarily from the perspective of a retailer. Therefore, I believe that the Forum was primarily meant as a low-cost platform to help newbies become comfortable enough to buy PCGS's products. Rabble rousers are counterproductive from that perspective. Exile was a no-brainer and the resultant discontent a small price to pay.

Actually the people here are just a drop in the bucket in the scheme of the whole picture. For him as the leader of his company to worry very much about what happened here makes no sense. Probably he does have some thoughts but to really worry about this board.....I doubt it.

BTW is the Migration to the so called "Across the Street" place or is it to another site ? I believe the other site wins this one Hands Down.

Edit to add: Across the Street is Hot. 13 threads posted to on the Coin forum and 3 threads posted to on the Registry forum yesterday, 3-17-2003. Pale comparison to this so called Dead Place.

  • These boards create revenue, if it didnt he wouldnt be footing the bill for it (it would be long gone). It is a marketing tool . The man is here to make money , thats the bottom line. I beleive he cares whats been going on and maybe he pulled the trigger too soon, but thats all in the past now. You have to live with your mistakes, even if you wont admit them.
I noticed many members are trying out other coin sites, mabe they will stay there maybe not. So in conclusion, even if one member is gone from these boards,it cost us all something, knowledge, profit or just the ability to say whats on your mind.

Good post Mark. Why do we look at this as an either or proposition. Both boards are viable sources of information. There are a lot fewer posts on NGC's board, obviously there a fewer members over, partly because it is fairly new and also because this board has been established and frequented by some very knowlegeable and helpful collectors. It's encouraging to see the imput from the new members who are dealers.

The personality of the NGC is evolving and it is different here. You don't see the ebay threads, the guess the grade threads etc. The coin forum focuses fairly well on coins and coin related topics. I also think there is a difference in the modus operandi of the boards. Its there to promote interaction between NGC, NCS employees and the posters. Not saying that makes it better, just different. Late Sunday night I posted a question to ASK NGC board. By Monday morning when I logged on I had received a PM from Rick Montgomery. Within an hour I had my questioned answer. Nothing earth shaking, just wanted to know how to tell if a coin had been graded prior to the * designation. Turns out it was so it makes sense to me to send it in for designation review and spend the $6.50. Point being a minor question like this was answered promptly.

I struggle in deciding who to submit coins to. I like the customer service at NGC, but like the standard of copper grading at PCGS, although I have been told NGC has toughened up.

Like Gilbert I am thinking on this. It's a shame that some of us look at the boards as competitors. They really aren't, both are composed of collectors. I for one constantly remind myself of this.

Sorry Mark this is the best way I can answer your questions. I never attempt to speak for another and their motivation. I will say that the events that occured last week will prompt me to post less here. I really do feel more comfortable in the atmosphere that NGC has fostered on their board.

I don't think HRH anticipated those situations. I suspect that he has much bigger things on his radar right now, and the resultant brouhaha of two members aren't a big enough blip on his radar to acquire much of his thought.

Mike very nice answer to the question that was asked. I'll go along with you on asking why people have to turn participation into a Either/Or situation. Valuable information can be obtained from either site. To make one place the only place you will vist is just a way of hurting yourself and no other person. Along with the board stance I believe the purchasing of only one services Slabbed Coins is a mistake that will only hurt yourself. You may have a preference but to be closed minded well.......Is Just Dumb.

  • Who left?
    Who cares?
I was a pain in the azz before and I'm a pain in the azz now.
    What's different?

It's a marketing ploy. I bet it's mostly the whiners running away. Maybe if we play this right we can make NGC the holder of choice and we get the grades we want from them....CA CHING.

Mark, I hope that this Thread doesn't mean we are now going to miss out on one of your terrific Coin threads you've become recognized for. I know there are only so many Threads in each one of us and I'd hate to think we just lost one of your Great ones due to this one.

I think what Mr. Hall DID NOT anticipate when he set up this forum was a daily diet of: (1) flames/personal attacks among members; (2) here are my grades–PCGS burnt me again; (3) guess the grade complete with a lousy photo; (4) anti-PCGS flames; (5) look at my newp accompanied by platitudes and false praise even if the coin is an AT/altered surfaces/ugly piece of junk–and flames at anyone who says that the emperor has no clothes; (6) look at this ebay auction; (7) I just sniped my 600th 1964 Kennedy.

Pat - thanks! I plan on staying around.
  • Mark,

I think probably no to all.

One other question, if I may, if this was done for the sake of dealers (and market share for PCGS) will the dealers remain on these boards if it were only dealers. I can answer that one ... I don't think so !!

Gilbert sums this up very well for me, and I usually like to try to speak for myself.

The trashing of forum members by other forum members has left me more disheartened than anything else.

coinguy: I do not think the door is closed on the exiled board members. I did not see HRH state that they were permanently banished.

I have had questions about ebay auctions posted questions and even bought PCGS graded coins from one of them.
AND yes I have sniped a couple NICE Kennedy's.

    David Hall:

Could have and probably did anticipate most of what has happened.....

Is considering the many options he could choose from....

Reads these boards and reprimands himself for spending too much time here....

Restrains himself from posting too often knowing that hard to get works in many arenas...

    and....

Will, in the end give NGC a run for it's money by getting out of neutral (a place most rich folks end up in at least temporarily) and into high gear!

From where I sit, there are still several places to go talk about coins, including this one, but if you want to talk about collector issues like "which company is doing a good job with this series", or "so and so is really tightening up right now, save your submissions till they soften" this won't be a viable place to do so. I like visiting here, but now it feels more like prison visitation. Before, we were all talking on the phone through the glass, but now there is a guard standing there listening.

Us little guys don't make a bump on a gnats a$$ in the big picture. We have been told by the dealers, David Hall and other collectors we are stupid. Only the big dealers matter. If PCGS went back to dealers only submissions and turned these forums off it wouldn't makwe a bit of difference in their bottom line.

To describe this Forum " We few, we happy few, we band of brothers(and sisters)".

On this Forum, we dont criticise any one who leaves, we rejoice over anyone who stays.

With a little politeness, some common sense and just a dab of appreciation, we can say

just about anything we wish. We can buy any slab we wish and we are free to be critical

if we wish. People have the right to express a contrary view with out being flammed or humiliated.

Just because we may know less about coins then some others, does not give them the right

to abuse us. This Forum will go on, those of us left will go on and the world will go on.If you dont

    like it, well.................................................................................thats OK too.

Good series of questions... I don't have answers, but for some reason, I would like to add my thoughts. First, let's look back at some of the threads on this forum that basically have served no purpose and have clearly violated the agreement that all members agreed to before registering and posting on this forum. Unfortunately, when there have been abuses and members have done things that crossed the line and now we have seen the consequences. Did CU anticipate the abuses? Probably not ... In

response to the recent enforcement, there have been complaints. However, if we take a good look at the threads and posts that have been made by a number of members, would such posts/threads ever see the light of day if the type of censorship everyone feared was actually used? The bottom line is CU is reminding members to be responsible and treat others the way you would like to be treated. Lets move on a exchange ideas, comments and thoughts about coins.... isn't that really why we are all here?

BTW, I have posted my share of comments that have not been terribly kind with respect to PCGS, including comments about a 1946DDR WLH that was slabbed but not attributed by PCGS, Morgan Dollar VAMs and of course, my personal favorite, demanding that the grading services create a designation for original coins, especially for circulated type coins and gold coins, to separate enhanced coins from those that truly are original. I have asked Mr. Hall about this and he is of the opinion that the market does not want this...I disagree with him but I respect his opinion. I haven't censored yet or asked to leave and I seriously doubt that I will. Again, lets move on here...
