  • I actually go through raw cards myself and for some of my sets (75 mini and 78) almost all of my cards are from my own submissions, but I do think Steve has much greater contacts and probably goes to more shows.

In any case, my question was meant to more humorous than actually asking for an answer.
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.

Dave - Did you find any low pop 1969's in NM-MT at Setbuilders? I don't go to the east coast shows, so I haven't had the opportunity to peruse their inventory.

i also heard that he used to be a grader for psa so that in itself would help. if you know what their graders are trained to catch and how they grade each and every card then yes he has a big advantage.is this true i don't know. maybe somebody can confirm that.

jackstraw> One doesn't need to be a former grader to have a good eye for cards. This is a skill that can be learned and honed over time with sufficient work and practice.

In fact, I can see where being a former grader could be a disadvantage. Grading standards can and do shift slightly over time. If you do not account for this in your evaluation of raw cards you intend to buy, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Steve's got a really good eye and is a great guy. In and of itself, however, I don't know how much it means to be a former grader.

ok. so does this mean he was ? i personally think this is an advantage, um doing it for 40 hours a week.

Jack> Everything I've heard says you are correct. But look at it this way. . .if he was a bad grader would it still be an advantage?

this what i love about you mike the ability to debate without calling each other names.

i would have to say if steve was a "bad grader" he wouldn't have a complete 71 set in 8/9/10 gradeimage

I agree that Steve would almost certainly have been considered a good grader. But my point was that in and of itself, having been a grader isn't necessarily an advantage.
The attributes that Steve uses may have been refined by grading, but he still has to be willing to apply what he knows correctly. These skills certainly aren't restricted to former graders. I mean Andy Montero is building a 72T set in all PSA9 and has a good portion of his set from his own submissions. It can be done image

  • Steve worked for PSA, but wasn't a grader, per se. My understanding is he was a reviewer on one end of the invoice or the other. Sure, he would've picked up some grading skills, but not to the extent that a full-time, hot lights, dark room, long hours in loneliness, grader would have.

1420 - Wow! That stinks! Unlike a standard weekend show the National has activities earlier like Wed. or Thurs. Perhaps you can hook up then.
What are the closest Casino Hotels to the National? My luck would be buying a 60 pound '81 Topps vending case and trying to carry it with my other purchases 3 miles to my room or car, while having the wife nag at me the whole time while I was having my stroke...jay

I may have to do just that Jay. AC is not that big, and taxis are all over the place. I know Caesar's is most likely the closest to the convention center.

Any one meeting up on Wed or Thurs?

Does the Andrews have any print snow on the shirt sleeve? That's what usually downgrades the nice ones. If not, you'll have a great shot at an 8.
  • To all:

I can't believe I am the only one who really wants to meet Mr. Mint!!! I have heard so many wonderful things about him and his business dealings. His fair prices and wonderful communication skills are legendary! You all must have already met him. Were you able to get one of his awesome 1952 Topps cards with his super-photogenic picture on it? Since PSA will be there, I will be submitting as many as possible. Will James Spense authenticate an autograph of his? I am actually getting two hotel rooms so I can store all of the late 1980's commons I plan on selling him.

Neal, according to the press release, the dealers move in day is Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on what "class" of dealer you are (???). General admission starts Thursday morning.

I think I'll get a suite/room somewhere close and maybe host a hospitality event Wednesday night (maybe every night...?..ha)..... I'll start some plans....... Of course, everyone on the board is invited to stop by and say "Hi", have a K Koncoction (or regular beer for you lightweights), and have some fun.

We'll see what happens. If there's enough parties going on...who knows....

Jay...I've got a big 'ole honker "Tony the Tiger" glass ready for you (100 proof???..Rookie...)!!!

    Cheers!

    I'll keep you posted.

  • If it's like past years, corporate booth holders/"dealers" like Topps, Upper Deck, PSA, etc. move in Tuesday, while the dealers we generally think of move in Wed. I've been at the last 10 Nationals as a dealer, and have NEVER come on Tuesday (like I have any interest in that dog#@$@ meal they offer Tuesday night).
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
  • I would like to meet everyone
    except for MW!

King, if you are hosting an event on Wed count me in. As I am not a dealer I will be there Thursday only and get some dive room for Wed eve.

Wasn't PSA talking about hosting an event?

I have the '52 Mr. Mint displayed on my deck....I'm in need of any of his memorbilia (pennant, bobble head,e tc.). Please let me know if you have any extras.

  • I am shocked that such a high profile name like Ian Riccaboni did not appear on anyone's list image.

I cannot wait to meet all of you at the National this year. I have been tied up with basketball/baseball lately, or else I would have been posting more often. Have I missed any thing ? Have 1987 WWF cards skyrocked in value? Or how about my beloved 1988 Donruss cards?

My folks are getting the arrangements for the hotels and such. Original plan was to commute back and forth for a day or two, but it seems as though a hotel will be easier. image

I'll post more when I get the chance,

  • Ian,

It's funny you should mention 1988 Donruss! I was at the town transfer station this morning (aka the dump) and was dumping my paper recycling into the large bin and I just so happened to notice a few baseball cards catch my eye. You know how you can spot money on the ground from like 100 feet away? Well caseball cards are the same way. I instantly recognized a back from 1986 Topps, a slew of 1984 Topps and some 1988 Donruss! I spent a few minutes looking for other/older cards but only saw those relics with badly damaged corners from 80's there. Someone must have been tired of waiting for the prices to rise on those issues! image If you're really into that issue, I can give you the location of the transfer station and even what bin I spied them in!

    Cheers,
    Dave

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Scott Wetzel, if he is not the king of 70's Topps sets, I don't know who is. Have got to meet the drumming weiner, what a classic piece of work Paul has got to be.
Stan Musial topped the .300 mark 17 times and won seven National League batting titles. A three-time MVP, he played in 24 All-Star Games. Probably, the greatest player who is overlooked and underappreciated.
