1900-O over CC Silver Dollar

Most collectors are familiar with overdate coins, but there are also some over mint mark varieties too. One of my favorites is the 1900-O over CC silver dollar.

In 1893 the Carson City mint was abruptly closed when it was discovered that the mint officials there were guilty of malfeasance. At least five reverse dies were left over with the “CC” mint mark on them. In 1900 mint officials salvaged these dies by super imposing an “O” mint mark over the “CC.” The resulting coins, which are now known as VAM numbers 7 through 12, are quite popular with collectors. Here is a picture of a VAM-12 with a close-up of the mint mark.

These coins are not rare. In fact any collector who can afford the price can count on obtaining one, but they are popular.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Bill, the o/cc is very popular even if not rare it is very expensive. In the late 60's i baught a piece that had some very pretty toning that i sold for 5 dollars less than i paid for it [30 bucks] i think that coin woould have graded as high as 65 by todays standards 1 How many of us would be rich now if we had kept the coins we had when we were young!!! The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

Barberlover, maybe I own that coin now. Mine is a very pretty toned piece in a PCGS65 holder. It is a VAM-11. Nice piece it fits in my collection very nicely, if I do say so myselfimage

    Hey Bill,

I have a Vam10 in 63. At first I thought I lucked up on the 9, at regular price, but, alas.

I would like to have an example of each (less 8A), but it is a pricey coin (for me) to have five or so examples of. But, I am a variety enthusiast. image
