PCGS, ICG, NGC, ANACS, N.A.T.O

I have been collecting coins since I was a child (now 26, guh time flies). I have not until recently begun to get into certified coins. I like the idea of haveing a coin and knowing what I have. Anyway, I have started a collection of Silver Eagles in PCGS holders and I was wondering what other services compare to PCGS, if any? I have seen a VAST price and selling difference in the "same" coin just placed in a different holder. For example, I went to my local coin shop the other day and he had a 2001 PCGS Silver Eagle for 21.00 and an ICG for 14.00, why such the big gap???
Trying to make a set of just about anything....but too broke to do so.... :-P

Market perception. The market perceives the PCGS holdered coin to be more valuable. Many believe that ICG has a looser grading standard than PCGS. Its hard for me to tell on these silver eagles in super high ultra grades. Tough to tell the difference between MS68 and MS70. I love silver eagles and have complete MS69 sets in PCGS, NGC, and ICG slabs. And from the prices I paid I can see that the market perceptions clearly value PCGS higher than NGC, and NGC higher than ICG. The real lesson here is that the market value of the grade on these ultra high grade eagles is dependent upon the slab. Choose which ever you want, but now you have the information to make an informed decision.

PCGS is generally perceived by the market to have tighter grading standards than other services. In the case you mention, that's actually a pretty small gap compared to what it can be. Price differences in some other coins/grades can be extreme.

In some cases the premium is justified and others it's not. In your case it's probably worth $7 to you simply to keep them all in matching holders.

In other cases it can be taken to an extreme. A recent sale of PCGS PR70DCAM cent of questionable quality still brought $39,000 for the label, whereas a coin of equal quality in another holder could be had for under $100.

Also, I would stay away from the N.A.T.O. holders for the time being, the future of that service is in question. image
  • Please do not mention any other grading services here on the PCGS forum....it may violate the rules...thank you!!!

Those percentages are hopelessly out of date. Firstly, no one trades in NCI or INS slabs anymore. Secondly, no way does "the new" PCI rate above ANACS. That, and ICG isn't even on there.

Those guys really need to update their data.
