Anyone collecting the state quarters

I got 2 rolls of the newest state quarter today. although i am new to grading the coins do not look that good, lots of hits. Is this common with them. is it hard to find the really nice coins?

  • Rolls from a bank or the mint generally have quite a few marks.
  • Gary,

It comes in fits and starts. The US Mint official rolls are hit and miss (no pun intended). I've seen rolls that look like they were thrown on sandpaper, and one in a hundred that has lots of nice ones. I found three decent Indianas and a couple of Ohios.

The armored car company coins were bagged twice before rolling, so they can often be worse. I've gotten almost all my really nice ones from mint sets. (This isn't always true from year.)

Mint sets how do you go about getting them? You are not talking about proof set right?

You are most likely going to find the higher grade state quarters in the mint sets. I have collected all of the states rolls that the mint has made available and the quality is all over the place.

I don't collect rolls but I do collect state quarters in an Intercept Shield album.

The coins in the mint sets aren't necessarily mark free but they are usually
well struck. At least when you do finally find a clean one it will be a true gem.
The mint puts the current year on sale around June for $14.95 Older sets
will have to be purchased on the secondary market and will sometimes be
quite affordable. Most mom and pop dealers will have at least some mint sets,
otherwise they are available from many on-line dealers. The US mint site is
    WWW.USmint.com

I have 2 rolls from each year and mint mark and started the moment they came out. The first ones are not "mint" rolls because they did not start the program unill 200, I believe. I don't collect individuals.
  • I buy the proofs, both clad and silver each year plus the mint sets. That's about it.

I have a ceramic monkey bank. I put all my statehood quarters from change in there.

    I call them monkey food.

    Gary,

The mint sets are sold through the US mint (during their year) and on the secondary market (when they're sold out). These aren't proof sets, you're right. They're Uncirculated strikes from business dies that are typically handled differently from the regular circulating coin avenues and placed in celo or pliofilm sheets and sold as sets. They're usually about $14 a set when they're still in issue. Most of the time, I've gotten my best MS moderns through mint sets (you do get nasty ones sometimes, too, so watch carefully).
