torn on showing my coins tommorow, would like some opinions on what to do?

I was thinking about bringing my collection with me to the large show in my area starting today with me Saturday to the show and to a little breakfast get together before heading to the show on Saturday and i would love to share my stoies behind them, however i'm worried about security. Often at shows collectors have carried there collections with them either as trade bait or to share with collectors and dealers for pure veiwing enjoyment and i was always happy when i was given the priveledge of veiwing someone elses collection but is doing this in public places like restaurants or coin show bourse floors to risky if you don't carry coin insurance?

Should i bring my collection with me tommorrow, opionions please? Les

  • I wouldn't bring thw whole thing, but a few coins that you would like to show off is always nice - I do that. You got to remember that yoiu have to carry it the whole day at the show, and sometimes that can't be fun. I would stick with a few coins to show.

Cameron gave good advice. Just take the ones you like the most and leave the rest behind. After 5-10 coins of "show and tell" most people tend to loose their interest.

Now you know how dealers feel when going to shows. The worry of having all that stuff is a real pain.

Barberlover, why don't you have insurance on your coins? I had my coin collection added on to my home-insurance policy--and they're protected in the event of theft/loss/whatever...this also includes when the coins are outside of my house (like at a show).

I would really look into insurance if I were you. I did it because I didn't like the idea of keeping stuff in a PO box, and not being able to pull them out whenever I felt like it. That seems a shame if you can't share them with others because you're always worried about being robbed.

    Good luck.

Whoops, I meant bank box, not PO box. I wouldn't want to keep them at the bank.

the reason why i have not purchased coin insurance is that i've heard many people post about it either being to expensive or the insurance company didn't pay full market value for people when a claim was filed, if i baught coin insurance on certified coins worth 3 or 4 figures each, i'd want it spelled out in the policy that they would either pay full market replacement value on certified coins or at the very least would pay blue sheet bid, without that spelled out by the insurer in writing in the policy, coin insurance wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on.

I won't mention a name but I know a guy who got robbed and the insurance company was so good about paying about a year later got robbed again.

I agree with you that you'd have to be careful. Still, the best way to do it is to get good photos of each of your coins, along with the PCGS price guide price for each one (not Bluesheet!, unless you want a really low payout in the event of a loss). I have Allstate insurance, and I was pleasantly surprised by how little it cost me to add on my collection...of course, I'm betting that yours is more valuable overall.

Still, I think it's worth a call to your agent just to check it out. You've got nothing to lose, and a lot of peace-of-mind to gain.....even if you take just a couple of your beauties to a show with you, that's still a big loss if something were to happen.

Bring a few representative examples and be discrete. You won't have any problems. I've done it for years.

The chances of being robbed are not that high. Despite what you hear on the nightly news crime has gone down for the last 10 years. I for one will not live in fear and would resent the thought. This is a free country, bring your collection and share its beauty with others.
  • I don't think I'd pull them out in a restaurant, but I'd think the bourse floor would be okay.

Always keep a good eye open as you walk to/from your car though.

Me too Les - I really liked seeing your collection of great coins.

Hey, I'll drop my price - that dollar and dime you liked for $80.

I should have brought my camera, we could have got opinions on that 1916-D.

I'd feel safe at the show but not in a restraunt. Bad idea. I might be insured by S&W but I can't very well jump up & dirty harry a punk that snatches my briefcase right in the middle if the Waffle House dining room.
Also be very alert as you leave the show in the parking lot and drive away because the thugs will also follow you down the road to rob you.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
