A Superb Flyer !

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. image

Perhaps we should have a "What was it struck through?" contest. A bear, an old boot, a used handkerchief, a dead rat? Opps, I forgot, this a a "wholesome" coin.

Especially when the holder is an antiquity. Yes, PCGS was a lot tougher back in the old days.

They must of net graded this eye appealing beauty down from MS-68 for a slightly weak strike.

If there's no post-mint imperfection, shouldn't it technically be at least a 70?? I guess the green spots dropped the grade a bit since PCGS market grades coins.

Not my series, but nonetheless I will not pass up an opportunity to get a few swift kicks in on it. A coin that could only be purchased sight obscene.

"Someone" was not thinking of a nice bear like you, Bear. But rather one of those not-so-nice bears, the "that's a bear of a coin" bear, Bear. We certainly want to keep our bears straight.image

Did they use bear grease back then....image Well, some sort of grease...sorry Bear.

The handkerchief was probably used to spread the bear grease on the boot that kicked the rat that landed on the dies that ...image

Oh well, Buy the story, not the coin!

If we could tone that sucker up, maybe in orange, purple and olive green, heck, it might bring $3K or $4K.image

On second thought, my theory is that it was a failed attempt to produce one of those dateless, no "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" 1856 Flyer patterns that Lakesammman has on his signature line?image

Sorry if this is all tongue in cheek, but couldn't this be a case of an opened holder. Good coin removed, bad coin put in and holder glued back together?

Actually Typetone, there does look like there's something funky about that holder. I have a hard time believing that coin ever graded 63.

  • I thought PCGS was the most conservative! Those green spots must be on the outside of the holder. image

This coin is the evil twin of the MS63 Goose posted very recently. If anyone wants to know what active carbon looks like check out the reverse as Lakesammmon mentioned. Likely dipped just before grading and now stewing in its slab.

    Shylok

I'll thank you to spell my name correctly - or were you thinking of Lakesalmon?? Just call me Lakes for shortimage

Is that theory for real about swapping coins?? Or just another conspiracy type theory??
