A Classic Coin Image, a Classic Coin question, and a coin service...a perfect topic?

I have been very intrigued with the new NCS service across the street. I know it is somewhat controversial as so many opinions have been aired in previous posts. I found what I believe to be a good candidate for NCS and I will be calling them tomorrow to get my submission number as I am an ANA member.

This Trade $ has been heavily soiled/toned with a black gunky looking substance. It has obviously been dipped in acetone(?) to remove this gunk but as you can see much of it remains. The surfaces are incredibly clean. Hardly a mark to be found. Pretty good strike. The luster is weak, probably due to its prior dipping. Take away the unsightly gunk this coin appears technically strong.

What are your views here?

1. Is the coin too damaged to be conserved, or in other words.. will NCS accept it with guaranting the MS60 grade?

2. Do you think it will upgrade after conservation?...What Grade?

3. Am I committing a holy sin in submitting to this coin doctoring service?

I'll post when this little experiment is complete and link to your informed opinions.

I would not send it to NCS. I like the coin and its just fine in the ANACS holder.

I would leave it alone, unless it looks ALOT worse than what the pic shows.

ncs will only guarantee the grade if you are in complyance with these three items

it is sent into them already in an ngc holder
and they agree to conserve it
and you resubmit it to ngc!

so if you send them this coin as is there are no guarantees if IF they agree to curate it for you

you get it back raw and conserved

since i cant see the coin in person i cant say for sure if it can be improved

strongly suggest you don't mess w/ that coin. i'd hope the ncs would turn you down, as the coin is fine the way it is. it's not ms-60 due to the gunk, it's ms-60 due to a poor strike & total lack of luster.

"it is sent into them already in an ngc holder"

Are you sure? As I sit here and read the "NCS Optional Grade Protection, it actually reads " Only coins that have been previously graded by NGC or another grading service pre-approved by NCS shall be eligible for the program."

Of course, it is contingent upon NCS evaluating to determine if they will conserve it, if you want it encapsulated by NGC, you request the option upfront, AND you respnd w/in 30 days.

The grade protection option is "If grade protection is selected and a coin grades lower at an NCS approved grading service, NCS will make up the difference as a result of the lower grade."

within the text of the decription of the option of Grade Protection, it further states that "... at NCS discretion it will exchange with an equivalent coin at the earlier higher grade from an approved grading service, purchase the coin at fair market value of the earlier grade, or credit the NCS authorized dealer's account with the difference."

I would like to know what NCS's opinion is, but I would probably leave it alone.
