Anaconda: The Perils of Dealing in PCGS Early Coins

dudes, what i'm trying to say is that it isn't realy fair to say that eac grades "more conservatively" or "lower" than pcgs. they grading scales are different & based on different pricing structures altogether.

ie, suppose a large cent trends $500 in xf, $200 in vf. pcgs grades it xf. so the price is $500. if eac grades it vf, that does NOT mean it's really worth only $200, because you don't use "trends" to look up values corresponding to eac grades. you use copper-quotes. in copper-quotes, the value in vf might well be $500, & in xf $1000.

it just doesn't make sense to say "eac is more conservative than pcgs", because the grading scales are not intended to relate at all.

i've seen plenty of posts where someone tries to say "pcgs is market-grading, eac is technical grading", but in reality they both always come down to market-grading. it's just that eac grades use a different price guide.

like i said before, grading is supposed to work that you PRICE the coin FIRST, then the grade follows from the price, NOT the other way around.

Well, I guess what everyone here is trying to say is that NumisEd was correct in the other thread when he called PCGS to the carpet for slabbing the S-30 as MS-66. Funny how NumisEd gets completely trashed and shredded by everyone for making an allegation that PCGS can't grade early copper, but when others say it, then it's okay. .......................apology accepted.

Come to think of it a new grading scale where the coin would be graded by its technical grade (corrected for eye appeal) times a fraction for rarety would be interesting.

    So let's see...

So an 1883 Trade dollar in PR 67 would still be a 67, but TDN's 1885 PR66 would become PR69 or 70??? Imagine the two coins side by side. Probably not a good idea.

hey russ, is that a quote from "being there"? >>

    Karl,

Don't know, I've never seen the movie. It's just something I've been saying for years. Not sure where I picked it up.

i think you'd like the movie. kind of a dark comedy, not at all like the "inspector clouseau" movies. "chance the gardner" is an idiot who talks in terms of gardens & growing plants, & somehow his comments are mistaken as brilliant economic advice by advisors to the president. really a great movie.

having seen the coin 15 years ago, as well as last year, I think you're a bit conservative with your grade - if you can come up with them like that, I'll take a baker's dozen, pleeeeaseimage

Baley, you said "early copper is tough! very reactive"

Are you sure you weren't speaking of some of the forum members and not copper? image

heh. wouldn't be my first double entendreimage

you know what though, i AM starting to come to think more like dorkkarl every day, reading on here about folks trying to decide what exact number a coin is and they trying to assign a value to it from that.

the coin in question is a damned nice large cent, one of the best I've ever seen, if not THE best.

Technically a 66 or 65 or whatever EAC would graciously award it, maybe AU (i understand they're tough on surface granularity and the like, because early coppers are SOooooo reactive) doesn't really matter to the final buyer as much as the simple question, "Can I afford this?"

Anyway the number on the slab is just a starting point, anyone considering the coin would certainly have to view and price it according to their desires, hopefully one with the budget to contemplate the coin knows enough about this type of coinage to make an informed decision.

As one who doesn't even entertain a coin like this, I won't even try to convince anyone that my opinion of it's grade is any better than what PCGS came up with at it's most recent visit to their office.

My, my, my, how things have changed! Nowadays, the vast majority of collectors of Early Copper much prefer to buy coins that carry the imprimatur of PCGS.

A very interesting commentary. Which makes me take a deep breath, as I just finished sending all of my Large Cents to PGCS for grading and true views just this week. I've been collecting them since '86 and I still feel like a guppy in the ocean of professionals.
