  • So was the point of this just to start another witch hunt? Dragon seems to like doing this...stir the pot then run like hell, with no explanation or retraction.

Dragon, in a language you'll certainly understand:

Quel est mauvais avec ce Dollar de Morgan? La France en vie longue!

Okay, enough of the BS...what's the story on this coin? Is it or is it not counterfeit? How long is this going to drag out? Or is this just going to be another one of those "What's wrong with this coin" threads whose sole purpose is to break reply records?

    Dragon...c'mon! What's the real deal?

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • Dragon,

It would seem they didn't see a thing.
  • I suspect this wasn't as much about a coin, as it was a specific seller.

Pretty obvious they didn't see one dang thing! The heck with a fraudulent coin. THIS is a fraudulent thread! image
  • How about a modified 1879-O. The right part of the "O" is cut out leaving what appears to be a "C". Another "C" is added to the left, creating that "shifted left" look to the MM.

DCAM- I sure wish, at times, you had your PM function on then I would have PM'ed you as I have others today (FC57Coins, being the last one), what I believe to be "wrong" with this coin.
The reason for a PM? If I'm incorrect, and I certainly very well may be, I hate to disparage an eBay'er and his auction publicly, unjustly.
    Now, that's fair, isn't it?

PS: Why the mood today? I'm reading in a couple of threads a bitter taste coming from you and don't understand why.

Well, I will throw out a few things for thought, most (and maybe all) of which are not original to me.
One member suggested the N in UNUM is missing its diagonal line, and maybe a sign of a botched alteration. The line does seem to be missing. Maybe it is the lighting, but I don't think so, and the missing line is unique enough that if original, we wouldn't be seeing it for the first time, would we?

It may be a coincidence, it may not be, but there is a noticeable gash-type mark on the nose. It may be another sign that a tool used in the alteration process slipped. Then again, it may not be.

As for the mystery behind the "perfect cc," I think that is this company's way of saying it is not the cc/cc type, or vam-3. Either ANACS or NGC would have probably just opted to call it a vam-2 instead of characterizing the coin by the vam-2 attributes.

As for the 4 known vam varieties, this is where I have my doubts. I see an open 9, so that rules out vams 1 and 4. The grading company has ruled out vam 3, so that leaves vam 2. A vam 2 has a tilted mint mark, which this seems to have, but also has a filled "G" in "God," which this coin does not seem to have.

Soooooooooo, does this tell us anything. I guess that is the beauty of the big 3 grading companies -- you have more confidence in their ability to authenticate. My confidence in this company is zero, so yes maybe Dragon and Braddick had us all going, but there is enough about this coin that is iffy that has me wondering.

Of course, anytime anyone wants to add to the analysis, by all means do so.

I hope Lava my PM was satisfactory in explaining my issues with this Morgan and the reasoning behind not stating so publicly during a currently running auction.

Braddick- My apologies to you. No real "mood".

I REALLY APPRECIATE your thoughts about the PM, so as to not disparage an Ebay seller. That was my "mood" with this thread. In my opinion, Dragon placed a real shot across the bow of this auction/coin and them refused to provide any proof or thoughts about the coin. Too many people read these threads for that kind of stuff.

The other thread is probably self-explanatory. I'm just amazed someone could attempt to use the submission results of another Member in an effort to build their own credibility. And then it seems as though some are plenty willing to accept it.

To the other forum members, lighten up on Dragon and Braddick. They see something that they only care to share in private. I guess they realize they may be wrong. I can't speak for them. Having given this coin a lot of study, albeit images only, my faith in this coin will be reflected in my strength of bidding. I recognize some of the bidders for this one -- I guess they see something they like. And then there is this other faction that sees something else.

    Good stuff!!!!

On another note, is the rule of thumb for grading hand held appearance for grade, and resort to the microscope for authentication and attribution? I think I have that right.

Maybe better images of the `79-cc would reveal more?

Looks like we will all have to wait 4 days to find out what the big secret is...I don't know enough about VAMs to comment with regards to that. I do see all of these little things that people are pointing out, but I dunno...when I first looked at the picture I thought the CC looked funny, but there are a lot of varieties in the appearance of mintmarks, so again, I dunno.

It is interesting to me that people here have had no problems commenting on ongoing auctions in the past...will wait to see why some are choosing to hold back now...

    Hoping to learn something.

Lava - if you have been bidding on this, email the seller or 'ask the seller a question' requesting close-ups or blow-ups of the certain areas you need to see.

They should be happy to oblige on a coin with the bidding in the thousands.

I am also curious - not to buy, but to find more on NTC's ability.

I have asked the seller for better images, but no response as of yet.

No pix forthcoming, as the seller is out of town, as the ad states.

Lesson for us all -- don't put your coins for sale on ebay when you are going to be gone for the duration of the auction.

I too would like to know what the supposed problem is. Maybe you should just PM everyone who responded to the thread; it's apparent they have an interest, but are confused by the non-response.

Dragon last visited on March 11th, 2003 11:36 PM, so why hasn't he responded to questions in his own thread?
