PCGS and a lost Registered package...

On February 21, the PCGS sumission status website showed that they sent me their usual registered, insured coin package. Not having received it by this week, I called PCGS customer service and was in fact advised that the coin left on 2/21 - they also gave me the Registered number.

I then went to the USPS website and keyed in the number and there it was, signed in at the laguna Beach post office on 2/21 - no follow-on activity though...

So, what happens next? Do I put the trace on the package or does PCGS. And, when can that trace be started?

Thanks for the info...

I don't recall, however, here is the URL for the US Post Office and you can probably find out all you need to know on that site. Good luck.

I believe you can file a claim on Regisered Mail after 15 days. So do it now. They will search like hell for that package as the USPS takes Registered very seriously. It requires a signature everytime the package changes possession. I have always felt very secure when sending Registered and have never had a problem. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

The first step is to check with the local post office that handles your mail. You'd be surprised how many times a package gets tucked away in the back and temporarily lost.

True but registered mail is segregated and always under lock and key. There is direct responsibility. Hence very secure. The incidence of theft is tiny, unlike regular mail blazened with Supreme Rare Coin Galleries as the return address.image

I think PCGS is the one that must file the claim as they are the ones that sent the package. I would have PCGS get on the ball and try to get the process started on their end while there is still a chance to find your coin. I would also contact your local post office as soon as possible and try to get them to start searching. I wish you luck and please let me know what happens. mike

It could just me misdirected. I wouldn't worry too much at this point. Do as the others have said and check with your post office. It will probably show up. I shipped a package from Milwaukee, WI to PCGS, and it took three weeks.

  • Yes, they're very careful, but mistakes do happen. A registered box full of coins addressed to me at my PO box was once delivered to the manager of the local Sears store out at the mall. I finally got the package once the manager opened it and realized it wasn't for him. There was no explanation other than it was a screw-up, and the postal folks were extremely apologetic, as you could imagine!!

  • I have had registered from PCGS take up to two weeks for delivery and as little as four days. Just a day and a bit of a drive away. If it does not show up by Monday I might get concerned in your case though. The Post Office does take registered mail quite seriously and has little losses in that department.
  • Thanks everyone for the input. I just came back from my Post Office and had them search high a low. Guess what... tucked away in the back of the 'safe draw' was my package.

    Got it! Whew.....

Great to hear you found it! I had one lost last year and it was about four months of screwing around and not knowing if the claim would be paid until one day a check arrived in the mail for $3,000+. mike image

imageIt usually travels by mule train!! Be patience and wait for Monday!! From Fla. to California takes roughly 10 days for some unknown reason!! At the rate they charge it should go by air, but it is shipped by special couriers, and depending on the load between east and west, it has to make several stops for separation and further delivery.
Well, that's the story I recieved several times in the past.

    Bloodhound,

I glad you received your package. I have been lucky to "NEVER" have lost a package with the post office!

Did you get any super grades in that package?
