If you were DH, would you close the Forum to put out the flames?

They would never close them, but a moderated forum looks like a very real possibility. Anti-PCGS sentiment could be sanitized.

  • Not a bad idea, but then the flames would be higher when/if it opened back up.

I think they should take a serious look at what goes on in this forum these days though. With all the "experts" and ordained leaders of the faith, I'm not sure there's much useful info for the average collector in this forum. And if you have a differeing opinion, well God save you then.

But if they did shut down the forum, who would police eBay?

That would be a very imprudent move on the part of HRH... It would do nothing to quell the flames (but probably exacerbate the flaming) except to move it across the street, to CoinTalk.Org or to Usenet (RCC).

It'll force NGC to get their own server though...

  • No. If I had a problem i would just log myself off the forum and not read for a while.

  • If you close this forum you lose the chance to hear the complaints and to act on them. Thats the best way for a company to act. . Dont be like the crooked companys and shut down and hide from their investors and the customers.

If you dont like the complaints you need to fix them and not hide from them..

Flames? What flames? Just another day on the crazy train. If I was a businessman with this much interest in what I was going to do in the future I would consider this to be a great omen. It points out that PCGS is far from perfect, but has a large and very outspoken clientelle.

    Just my rotten opinion.

Considering that is a completely awful business idea, I'm sure it is strongly being considered right now.

If you close this forum you just asked a few thousand people to move across the street to NGC. NGC would be more than happy to have all of us and they will be happy to resolve any problems we have with them. They would also be happy to have the thousands of submissions that come with us.

Look at the forums that censor posts against the company (Coin World is one). They are dead.

dude, this forum don't amount to diddly-doo in the big scheme of things. i think you way over-estimate how much impact this has on mr. hall, but i guess i can't speak for him.

This forum is a treasure trove of valuable feedback for PCGS. Even the posters that criticize, for the most part, wish PCGS to excel. Taken in that light, it would be a mistake to close it down. Rather, they should embrace it and strive to change things for the better. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and what better place to find out the symptoms than this board? image

No, I would just ban the people that always start them - and make it take longer to get a password so they wouldn't be back tomorrow.
  • I would not shut down the forum for many reasons that have been cited.

However, I would add that any attempts to crush healthy dissent are almost always followed by a fall, so I don't think it would be a wise business move to shut down the forums because of criticism.

Coin World censors posts which disagree with other positions also. People
at the site know that almost anything may be censored so avoid many topics
or positions. The moderator will flame people and delete their posts.

What happens when you try to stamp out flames? Sometimes you spread the fire. Whether we are people who can significantly impact the hobby or not is irrelevant. However, we are a big focus group of the hobby.

That would be a big, big mistake... cutting off the forum at this point just would create issues that no one would what to deal with.

It would just suppress the problems, until one day all the problems will be overwhelming. It's quite simple really to just address the problems. PCGS seems to be doing a bad job of that lately.

  • Andy, that would be a very bad idea since members PAY to participate on these boards. Whether PCGS likes what is posted or not they DO have the right to moniter and remove NASTY posts and ban posters that truly offend others.

Had trouble with the site loading up this morning before work and that was one of the first thoughts.

Maybe not closing the forum down but some timely "technical difficulties" to let everyone catch their breath.

PCGS has been one of the few Forums that allows criticism of the management

that pays for the site. Methinks that perhaps this week, we have pushed the envelope

rather far. It is never a good thing to attack non stop, as all things on earth have limits,

even the liberal attitude of the management of this Forum. Let this be a thought to ponder,

as our comments get further yonder. Bear

Not a good idea. When this site goes down, the traffic at NGC soars. You don't want people to go over there even for a short period of time. People might just like it over there and decide to stay.
  • No. He could go silent on the Q&A board or not even post. His post from March 06 just keeps the embers burning.

So far I have been impressed by HRH ability to listen. He happens to listen well and curteously. That is not to say that he doesn't have a weak moment once in a great (no one is perfect!) while but his affable personality bounces right back.

I have had a number of opportunities to "vent" with Mr. Hall re: PCGS as well as CLCT in general and I must state that he listens well and respectfully. I will also state that he is generally cautious and does not make changes quickly.

I cannot say that about most company leaders.

Companies pay big money to get "legitimate" feedback from customers even if its bad. Personally, DH would probably want to silence the critics but as a business decision he understands its value to the company as to what works and what does not. It stays.
