Got MY First Report Card Today From PCGS

These were my four "free" submissions to PCGS:

1916-d Mercury-------cleaned (ouchimage)
1921 Mercury----------damage (another ouchimage)
1921-d Mercury-------G-4 (exactly what I expected)
1945-s Walker--------MS-64 (was expecting a 63image)

Obviously I have a long way to go on my grading skills. Had I waited and read these boards a little more I may have been able to identify the cleaning on the 16-d.

    Goose-

    Had it not been genuine I probably would have had more than a sad face posted. I probably wouldn't be able to see through my tears to post the results.

    My thoughts exactly... I'd personally send it to ANACS... they will at least assign a net grade to show the extent of the cleaning.

    NCS does not give a net grade.

    From an educational standpoint that's a good first submission as you will have alot to help you understand how the grading system works and the MS64 is a nice little bonusimage. mike

    why let anacs essentially assign a value to the coin!!!!!!!!!!! screw them!

    let NCS put VG details.........cleaned on it and leave it at that. Let the next person that buys the coin decide for his/herself to what extent THEY feel the cleaning affects the price.

    NCS all the way for problem coins!!!!!

    Which might be why Jeremy suggested Anacs.

    Who is NCS? I have heard of the others, but not NCS, Do they have a website? I was hoping for a F-12 on the 16-d. But.....

    I think you may be able to find a link on NGC's website.

    It will cost you 12.00 I think plus shipping to have that slabbed/graded.

    They will grade the coin and then note the problem. They will not "net" grade it. That is one thing I really dislike about ANACS.

    Thanks Kiefer and Goose..any other thoughts on what I could do with the 16 d other than chuck it down the street? I was really hoping to have it reside in a PCGS slab.image

    send to NCS and do the 12.00 option.
    Don't do the 6.00 option. All they will put on the slab is GENUINE

    list it on ebay and let her fly! Then pick up a nice ANACS/NGC/PCGS one
    I'm not a fan of problem coins either.

    This may be a stupid question but - how do you know the 1916-D is genuine?

    When the PCGS graders see a coin that is - cleaned/whizzed, damaged, questionable toning, PVC damage, questionable authenticity -> what does the bodybag say when returned?

    Your first submission did better than my first submission for the $99 free 4 submissions.

    1835 half -> questionable color
    1864 2-cent -> altered surfaces
    1900-O dime -> cleaned
    1999-D SBA !!!yippee!!! MS67
  • PeetiePeetie Posts: 627 ✭✭
    Not a stupid question at all..I just assumed that they would check the authenticity first and then reject it as cleaned. Anyone else know?

    Today is Tuesday, I will ask the boss at Q&A Forum - maybe we will know in 5 hrs.
  • Would you happen to have a scan of the ones that were bodybagged? Might be educational for the rest of us to see if we can see the same cleaning and damage PCGS saw...

    Cameron- I was referring to ANACS... I chose ANACS over NCS so he would get the net grade image

    well - this must be the post you were referring to Peetie.

    Getting the 1916-D Mercury back from PCGS in a bodybag for cleaning does not deal with authenticity - does not mean it is or is not (according to HomeRunHall in Q & A forum)

    There are enough people on the board here who can tell by the D placement whether it is authentic or not - can you get good photos/blow-ups of the board.

    Nothing worse than paying $15-40 for an opinion on authenticity when you can get it for freeimage

    Yeah I hear you! When I get it back in the dreaded BB I will try to get a good photo of it. Thanks
