What is the difference between a member posting a coin that is for sale or having a signature link t

I am curious of the difference? Are both considered marketing and therefore inappropriate?
Is so, are 50% of us guilty of marketing? I see no problem with either.

Nobody looks at signatures unless it's a chick pic.

Are both commerce? or is there a difference. I see no difference and neither one bothers me.

Sure they're both commerce, but one is acceptable, one is not. It goes all the way back to the beginning of news groups. It has always been acceptable to have an unobtrusive reference in one's signature, but anything beyond that is considered spam.

Neither one bothers me, but I do see both as the same thing. Many members have displayed their displeasure with this. I have never done either, but if I did, would not like to be on the recieiving end.

Brian, The link in your signature line to your website is fine because any person that is interested in your coins can click on it if he wants to check it out but if threads are started for the purpose of selling your coin or what is percieved from other members as selling your coin it will eventually cheapen this forum in quality and it will be more like a BST forum (several sellers push the limit of what is accepted and several others think this rule does not apply to them because they deal in high end coins or something else they deem special). Like I said in an earlier post just post a picture of the coin after it is sold and there will be no confusion if it's a spam thread. mike

    Brian - you raise a good/interesting question.

To me, there is a big difference. One is often/usually an advertisement, which is THE point of the post. The other is a post (not an advertisement) about something coin related, where, if someone wants to, they can go an extra step to check out a coin or website, by clicking on a link.

Granted, the distinction might get blurred on occasion but I think I'm speaking of two different situations. For instance, I work for a dealer and have a link to our website at the bottom of my posts. However, when I post images in my threads, they are generally for educational purposes and are often of coins that aren't currently available for sale. If the coins are for sale on our website, I don't mention it in my posts and I don't list prices. I try to avoid doing anything that could reasonably be construed as spamming.

An interesting thread. I personally enjoy looking at pictures of beautiful coins, it is my favourite part of these boards. I personally couldn't care less if the coin is for sale or not, I just like looking.........I can see more mindblowing stuff here in an evening than if I spent a whole day at a major show and I don't have to leave the comfort of my home to do it! I honestly can't remember seeing a picture posted here with a price, S/H, return policy etc. etc., but have seen several that I knew were for sale because of who posted them. I have no problem with that, nope, none at all. Just my two cents worth.........

I would say a signature link is more like a business card, but a thread is more like an ad.

And that is why it is going to become more and more apparent to certain people that the CU coin forum is the place to go to show off material you are selling. I see an increase in what I consider spam threads. If others don't--or don't care--fine.
To me (and I will use my in a perfect world qualifier) this forum is a luxury and a great gift for collectors and dealers. I think darktone had a great post. That this forum is a free way of reaching so many people who share the same interests is a great, great thing. It needs to be respected by the people who use it. Since I have been here I have always thought one unwritten, but necessary rule, was that the threads would not be used for personal commerce. It's a fine line, and a gray area. But sometimes when the misuse is blatant it is troublesome. And that's my opinion--no one else is required to agree.

Everyone here enjoys looking at pictures of beautiful coins, but if we use
this forum for buying and selling it will soon drown out everything else. You
can post links or use use the BST forum. Everyone does a pretty good job
of staying on the right side of this convention and we usually will inform
those breaking the rules in a courteous manner. Let's remember there is
a grey area here and some simply aren't aware of the convention.

I think that the fact CU made it very "CLEAR" that you cannot post sell ads in this forum but do not have a problem with putting most anything in your sig line is the difference.

It does not matter if "YOU" don't see a problem with it. It doesn't matter if everyone doesn't see a problem with it. It is against the RULES to place items for sale here. When the registry sell forum was created it was because a dealer could not sell items on this forum. Some members ran a poll to see if members minded sell ads on this forum. It was overwhelming in favor of allowing sell threads. Then CU stepped in and said "NO". End of discussion, no sell threads on this forum.

I stand corrected. I had believed that it was merely consensus which prohibited BST on this forum.
