A question regarding P.C.G.S. submisions

Hello to all. I am regaining interest in coin collecting after being out of the hobby for some years. I do not own any slabbed coins but am considering sending some in for grading. I have been reading horror stories on here and on ebay about mail theft and other problems. What precautions do most people take when sending in coins? Any pointers for a Newby? I have been reading the forums since Christmas and find them very informative.

I send all of mine Registered Mail insured. Of course that doesn't completely eliminate the possibility of theft - nothing will. But it is by far the most secure method of shipping.

I always send my submissions USPS Registered. I have never had a problem. If your value is less than $500 you might want to send USPS Insured.

If the coins aren't expensive, just use regular/insured mail. If they are expensive, use registered/insured.

If you're sending in low value moderns, consider not using any insurance. It can save you a few dollars and the risk isn't too high.
  • Thanks for the input on my question. Most of the coins I want to submit are worth more than $500 each. Should I send them all in one package or should split them up? Im thinking about 20 coins.

How much more than $500 each? Registered Mail insurance maxes at $25,000 so if in total the value would exceed that it would be a good idea to split them up. Of course than it ends up costing more in shipping both ways.

  • Well thats another question. I have a 1889cc Morgan thats a sure AU. I also have a 1893s that was bought in 1966 as an AU but will in all probability grade XF. Its hard to put a value on these coins before they are graded as the price spread between grades is so great. Don't you get a little nervous dropping coins of this value off at the post office even with registered mail?

I try to save my submissions up until PCGS is at a show where I can hand deliver them. The few times I have sent them through the mail has been insured Registered mail and I keep tabs on when they have arrived by checking out the USPS web site.
PCGS Currency: HOF 2013, Best Low Ball Set 2009-2014, 2016, 2018. Appreciation Award 2015, Best Showcase 2018, Numerous others.

At best the two coins in AU for the 89-CC and xf45 for the 93-S would be $10,000 tops and maybe twice that if the 93-S goes AU50. Believe it, the postal service will make damn sure that your package does not get lost if you use registered mail.
