looks nice to me I like the "skin" on that coin, alot better than the overdipped one that resides in my collection (but hopefully that will change tonight)

not a bad looking commemorative but the color of the old commemorative don't do anything for me. I see some old Maine coin I would have clean if I own them. My only old commemorative is a AU Maine a nice thumbed coin use to pay the ship yard workers back in the 20s. Any reason to choose a columbian?

Is that the one you posted that you got from sadysta1 the other day? It looks a lot better than the other pict.

Please don't take offense, Russ, but for way less than $100, you can get a PCGS or NGC MS-63 that would be much more attractive than this one.

    Sorry. image

I guess it depends on how much? These can come pretty dark, and fugly.

No offense taken, Bill. Particulary since what I paid for this one wouldn't cover the grading fee and shipping on a slabbed one.image

is it your only example of a columbian half, or does it fit in somewhere with your holdings?

I like it, but not if it was going to be my only one.

btw, Russ, here's my only one of these:

    Baley,

It's my first. Sometimes I buy stuff just because I think it's cool; doesn't have to really fit in anywhere.image

Well, there are a couple reasons I wouldn't dip this coin. For one, the toning is too heavy to be effectively dipped. For two, I think it's AU and I think AU coins look stupid dipped white. Finally, I like it just the way it is.image

Alright, since I don't know how much you paid, I'll do this. I like the look. If it was under $25, I really like it. If it was over $25 but under $50, I think it's ok. If it was over $50, you struck out, I think you should have looked a little harder for one. image

image Hey, for under $25 it's eye candy. Start a new thread, best looking eye candy for under $25. Tough category, if you think about it. You'd have competition from some cheapo Merc's though. Those can be had really cheap, attractive too.

I gotta better-condition one, but gmarguli told me it was worth about $15-18. So I'm with the If-you-paid-under-$25 crowd.

I like that original type of toning. It gives the coin an aged look, which a coin that old should have.

Actually I don't have much of an opinion on it.
But, if you bought it because you liked it then I think that's a good thing
