Yet Another New Guy

I just returned to collecting this Fall after a twenty year absence when I retrieved my collection from a relative's safe. I started trying to get my son to give up collecting Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon cards and collect something honorable! Funny thing is, I got hooked on collecting coins myself in the process.... Found this forum while showing my son the images of different US type coins on the PCGS site, and have been educated, amused and provoked ever since. I thought I'd get my feet wet with a quick hello. With my modest budget I'm trying to complete a 19th century proof set and fill some gaps in year sets for Barber and Mercury Dimes and Lincoln and Indian Cents, and have completed a decent 20th century type set and my Liberty Head Nickel set (except for the elusive 12-S and the obscene 13). Oh yeah, I'm from Boston, can anyone recommend any coin shops or recommend avoiding any?

Welcome. I would ask if you have any proof JFKs but that question is copyrighted by another member. Feel free to absorb and share the wealth of ideas.

Was in Boston this past fall, glad all the construction is almost over (!), spent a great weekend in Barnstable.

I have about ten proof Kennedys, including two which are clearly Accented Hair boys still in original packaging. My son however is wild about Kennedys and has started a year set -- he's up to 7, same as his age. And I'll give you the "all clear" once the road construction is done here, we're not out of the woods yet!

  • Welcome Bailatacl,

I hope you enjoy learning from these guys as much as I have. I pick up something new here almost daily. I am a new collector, and these guys have kept me from making more than a few mistakes.

    Enjoy......image

Thanks Bustman, JJ Teaparty is where my grandfather first introduced me to coin shops thirty years ago, but based on their website their focus seems to be coins above my budget. When the spring thaw hits I'll take the subway in for a visit though, and see what the shop offers.
