What is the highest price that you have ever paid for a coin.....and which one?

For me, in 1989 I bought an 1865 Half Dime PCGS PR65 for $3800. Man, did I take a hit on that coin or what? I ended selling it years later for alot less(stupid mistake). Today the coin would probably grade PR66DCAM. Kinda like buying Amazon.bomb at $400 per share.

And did your purchase represent an aquisition that you had been focusing on for years.....to finally complete that collection......to get your hands on that one rare coin. Were you nervous writing that check?

It sure must be a great feeling!

Highest ever is $480 for a PCGS 63 1908 NM $20 last december. Next highest is $404 for a raw 1924 $20 (later became PCGS 63) back in august 2000. After that there is only 1 coin in the $300s and the rest are below $250 each.

  • The most i ever paid for a coin was $65 (including grading fee) I paid $44 for the coin and $21 for the slabbing, the coin is a 1976-CC trade dollar ANACS graded AU details net Good-4. I would have left it raw but with the amount of fake trade dollars around i just wanted to make sure it was real.
I should break $200 this year when i buy a PF mercury dime.

    $2404 for a 93-S Morgan PCGS vf25
I had a big fat check from selling my one ounce gold eagles when the price of gold cracked $300. Made around $100 on them. Happened to see a nice 93-S vf25 on eBay. As I recall there might have been one other bidder at most so it was easy pickins. Bought this from Coastcoin, the dreaded ACG seller. I still get regular mailings which go right to the circular file. With the rest of the big fat gold check I bought 2 more ANACS slabbed 93-S in vg10 and f12. Cracked em out and both came back vg10 from PCGS.

  • $1,350 for an 1885 MS-64 Liberty Nickel. Still on layaway, but I'm hoping to get it next week and send it in to be slabbed. No real story behind it, other than the fact that I'm getting it a month earlier than I was expecting because my wife put a payment towards it for Valentine's Day. I'm putting together a set of uncirculated liberty nickels and it is one of the pricier ones in the series...
  • $1900 for a 09S-VDB. Dealer got two of them in that day, he said he kind of thought of me when he got it, but wasn't sure if I'd be willing to pay that kind of money. I didn't even blink...put down 10%, and he let me pay it off over a couple of months.

  • 1887/6 Morgan PCGS MS64. picked it up on ebay for $700 along with a 80CC PCGS MS65 for $700. Looks like I'm gona spend about $1700 on a toned Morgan at the show (just need to finalize the deal)

My priciest coin is an UNC 1851 "Original" dollar. I paid ... well, a boatload of money for it, but it was well worth it!

I had seen the coin in a dealer's inventory for a while. I couldn't buy it right away, and so I waited. I forget how long I waited, but it was many months -- close to a year. One day, I noticed that the coin was no longer in the dealer's FPL. I was rather dejected, as I was very close to being able to make a credible offer on the coin.

At the next major show (Fall Baltimore), I went up to the dealer and inquired about the coin; he told me that he just wholesaled it to another dealer, but could get it back if I was really interested. He got the coin back, and I drooled over it. He asked me how much he had the coin listed, and before I can answer, he quoted me a number that was 20% less than what I would have said. I said that that sounded right... image And, I proceeded to initiate the final details of the transaction.

I couldn't pay for the coin upfront, so I didn't think it was right to negotiate on the price. Instead, I told him that I can leave a down payment and pay him the balance at FUN. Part of the down payment was a gorgeous 1849 dollar (PCGS AU55).

When I wrote him a check for the balance at FUN, I was happier than if I'd just spent a smut-filled weekend with <insert your favorite gorgeous woman here>, and I got to do anything I wanted as much as I wanted.

  • For Christmas, my wife and I had a discussion on gold coins. I tried to explain the difference between a
$20 St. Gaudens gold coin and an American Gold Eagle. Not an easy thing to do.

At that point, I didn't know which way to go. She solved that, bought one of eachimage

Therefore: St. Gaudens $460.00, Gold Eagle $380.00

I paid a considerable sum for a 1796 half cent without pole.
  • coppercoinscoppercoins Posts: 6,084 ✭✭✭
In 1988 while in a small antique shop in Pirmasens, Germany, I saw some old British and German coins in a tray in an antique curio cabinet. I asked the proprietor if he had any American coins, to which he replied in the positive and headed for a drawer. He pulled a tray out of the drawer and sat it on the counter for me to go through. That tray contained what I now know I should have come up with a loan to buy the whole thing. Contained therein were nice large cents, colonial copper, and some early silver. The prices he wanted were unrealistically low, so I purchased the large cent only - a 1794 with no flaws, a light chocolate planchet, and EF in grade with some hints of original luster. Price - DM700,- (which came out to about $400 at the time). I bought the piece thinking there was at least some chance I could eat it, but it really looked good if it were counterfeit.

I got back to my house (in Germany), got out a Coin World, and started calling proprietors of old copper. One such person told me he wouldn't be interested in such a piece, but he knew someone who would be that would call me. He did the next day, and we arranged for me to send the piece in for an offer. I sent the coin about four days later, and two weeks after that I received a check in the mail for $1,500. The coin had been real, and to boot was a rather rare die variety that probably would have fetched $2,000 on the auction block at the time, and I'm sure much more now.

So that's the story of the most I've ever spent on a single coin.

The most I've ever spent on a single purchase was a bit over $2,500 for a full run of BU cent rolls from 1935 to 1958 with extra rolls in the 1940s and 1950s - about 140 rolls altogether. Every coin therein was nice and red, and it came out to be a very lucrative purchase. The 1938S roll had many very high grade coins in it, as did some of the more unusual dates (for high grade coins) such as 1953P and 1954P.

The most I have paid for a coin is $797.00 at an auction for an AU-58 1955 double die. My second was $525.00 for a VF-35 1909-s VDB Lincoln cent. I am saving up for a 1916-d dime now.

  • In the spring of 2001 i saw the nicest barber half i'd seen since the late 80's on the heritage website but it was a better date in p.c.g.s. 66 and i really prefer to stick with type dates and this coin was listed at 7200 bucks, so i "tried" to ignore it, but my instincts told me i need to own this coin and the last time i ignored my instincts about a coin was when i passed on selling my entire collection plus more to buy a pq. 64 1799 bust dollar in 2000 for 56,000 that today would have fetched me about a 30,000 profit easy if i hadn't listened to a friend who had talked me out of it. So the week before i knew this barber half was going to be put on the make an offer section at heritage i talked to them and we agreed on 6700 fot that 1892 S barber half in p.c.g.s. 66 [2 graded at 6, 1 higher which is in the doc's registry set of every date and mint mark barber halves in 66 or better]

A year ago, I bought this 1907 MS63 $20 for $650. I recently crossed it (crack out) to PCGS as a MS63. I loved the luster on it - just explosive. I have seen these selling in PCGS 63 for $800-$850, so I guess I didn't do too badly.

I've paid much more for coins that I've flipped; but my record for a coin that spent significant time in my collection is $2400 for a PQ+ blazer PCGS 1913-S MS65RD Lincoln. It was from a dealer who has been mentioned on these boards in a negative light but who (almost) always seemed to find me coins that matched my want list perfectly and were PQ examples. If I had known then what I know now about early Lincolns I would not have let go of that coin until I had it in an MS66RD slab where it deserved to be. As it was, I still realized a reasonable chunk of change out of it when it had to go to make up the difference between my wife's engagement ring cost and my bank account balance (the rest of my FIRST Lincoln set paid for the wedding several months later).

I also bought an 1892-CC PCGS MS63 Morgan from this dealer...for $825 in May 2000...I still remembering raising the roof over his asking price so he said "just shut up about the price and I'll send it to you on memo...but you're going to keep it". The coin was a solid MS64 with a shot at 65 on a good day (must have been a Monday morning grading victim).

Watched the coin in Coin World for over a year, it was listed at $2700.00, and then it finally ended up on Ebay. Watched it for the whole week and bid on it within the last minute. No one else bid on the coin. Thought I got a deal on the date and still think the same.
