Update on the 1815 Quarter, NGC MS 65

An unattractive coin? Negative publicity? Bad photos? A bad write-up? Everyone’s in Long Beach and has bids pending in the Heritage sale?

You tell me. But the coin has, so far, garnered a bid in something like 7 days of $1,735.….on a coin that is listed in the Grey Sheet at $19,000.

At least you know if I’m (shill) bidding it, I’m not doing a very good job at it.

(and for those of you who need direct, plain, unambiguous information, i have never had someone else bid on my coins and I don’t bid on them
myself.)

Must have been neg. publicity from the earlier post....??

  • ... well, i think it's probably a combination of reasons. Negative publicity doesn't help. It is a coin that has been around long enough to have thick toning (although many people prefer white coins), the eBay market does grind to a halt when Superior, Heritage, Goldberg...and others (!) have auctions, and my write up was certainly not one of my more restrained write ups.....and i have had many people say that over selling is a mistake.....anyway, i though i might go fishing for a "told ya so" from joconnor...
  • I wish Superior, Heritage, and the other big auction houses would clear off of ebay. They all have their own auction sites. Also they bury other sellers coins.

Looking for Nationals, Large VF to AU type, 1928 Gold, and WWII Emergency notes. Also a few nice Buffalo Nickels and Morgan Dollars.

I've never had any luck selling expensive stuff on ebay. It's just the wrong forum. Everyone is looking to pay as little as possible rather than jump on a great coin at a fair price.

    Adrian,

At almost $2K, I would say that it's a timing issue. Your coin is clearly worth many multiples of that. Also, it seems that eBay is not a good place to sell quality material...

    Best of luck with it...

  • I thought Adrian was doing well on eBay. It seems like a good place for nice coins to me. But sometimes the bidders for a specialized coin just aren't looking. At least there is no SuperBowl to distract bidders this week image

Anaconda: Or maybe everyone is spent out from paying those crazy prices in Goldberg sale and some of the other more modern coins in Heritage? The classic coins

Or more collectors like me just got the good word that their kid's college tuition is going up 15%??image

We are also getting closer to April 15th as well and the dealers who did well this past year are going to have to raise some funds to pay The IRS.

  • To suggest its the negative publicity is to suggest that a large percentage of Ebayers acutally visit this site. Thats seems unlikely.

To suggest that its becuase the coin is unattractive also seems unlikely - as its not THAT unattractive.

My guess is that its a combination of 3 things: 'Rare air' at those prices + the buyers at that level are pretty knowledgeable and may know exactly what they are looking at and where it came from + lots of competition this week from the big guys / LB, etc.

This message brought to you with no winkies whatsoever.

This is only the first or second listing, right? We all know that a lot of your stuff doesn't sell on the first pass. image

I wish Superior, Heritage, and the other big auction houses would clear off of ebay.

Superior actually throws all their stuff into the category Other US Coins, which keeps it from cluttering up the regular categories.

Something else to think about snake; the buyers of your monster toned coins simply like pretty coins without regards to the technical aspects of them.
The buyers of higher grade blast white Bust material are few and far between & usually are seasoned grumpy old time collectors that puts the evil eye on their possible purchases.
To sell these types of coins you have to focus on the technical aspects of the coins surface rather than the grade or pedigree on the holder.
I hope you find my criticism more constructive than what was offered by joeblo in THAT thread the other week.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I've got to admit, i'm with you 100% of the way on that one....or at least have some feature to eliminate their stuff from searches, etc. if one so desires.

"I thought Adrian was doing well on eBay."

I've sold $99,000 worth of stuff on eBay as well as another $78,000 worth of stuff off eBay, all in the past 30 days. All things are relative.

well anaconda, i was gonna bid on your quarter, but can't afford to buy an 1815 quarter in NGC 65.

I do have the price of an 1815 quarter in PCGS MS64 in my budget, though, if I ever see one offered image

True........... but what's that got to do with the 1815 quarter? budabum!

    Bwahahahahahahaha! image

Sorry - couldn't resist that obvious straight line! No disrespect intended. image Seriously, when you step away from spectacularly toned coins, ebay is a serious bottom fishing venue. Price, price, price is all that is important. A white NGC MS65 early quarter at anything more than a bit over 64 ask is retail death!
  • image ANACONDA, Is it possible that "Ashland City" is on the tag and confusing to some people? You make no reference to the term in your description. image Also, please explain it to me, because I don't know!image

    Meanie.

(Feeling your oats today, eh? I saw on the cover of some particular periodical that your 1885 Eliasberg Trade Dollar is raising it's head at the
LB show for the first time in 27 years. Isn't there a roll of those floating around somewhere?)

  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,162 ✭✭✭✭✭
I guess this is the first time the 1885 has ever been displayed on the west coast. And other than the auction lot viewing, it's the first time it's been displayed anywhere since 1976!

I'm flying down tonight and will be there tomorrow and the next day. I imagine there IS a roll out there somewhere - I just gotta remember how to file down that darn "copy" stamped on the back like I did for this one! image

Now THIS is a nice coin! Sweet!

  • I appreciate that, especially because it's from you, TDN, a guy with caviar tastes.
  • dorkkarldorkkarl Posts: 12,691 ✭✭✭
that 28 half-cent is a hoard coin - best 1 there is for a type example. i know 1 of the dealers that broke up part of the hoard. if memory serves correct, his share of the hoard had something like 125 coins, all w/ mint red. it was broken up in the early 1950's.

I've been looking over the PCGS and NGC seated/bust type coins
for the past month on ebay and it seems none of them garner any interest whatsoever. My impression is that with high reserves set by optimistic sellers, the bidders are just bored of the games and go elsewhere (me included). I see a few major retailers on ebay that don't even get bids at melt on $20 gold coins because of the reserve price. No one cares and no one is going to waste their time.

    Adrian,

I think the combination of the various auctions coupled with the Long Beach show has something to do with it. Superior and Goldberg auctions are held before the Show, and there are always many people with deep pockets bidding on their material.

Another thing is that the majority of the type coins I see on your website have exceptional eye appeal -- these days, that's what the grading services like -- and that's what most of the buying public wants.

While I realize that there's just so much you can do with an image, with no disrespect intended, to me that Quarter just doesn't have the eye appeal of most other coins on your website. I think that explains the rest of it.
