Tried out David Lawrence

Thanks to all the kudos on this board, I decided to try out David Lawrence's website. I just ordered this beuaty (my first proof Liberty nickel): 1883.

We'll see if I still like it when it comes in the mail...

Nothing like a "pop 1" coin. Then you can use that as an icon, and give mine back image

  • Yeah, it would be good to use an icon that's one of my own ... how do I upload my own icon?

  • WACoinGuy,

I have made the icon of you new coin. Right click on the icon, select Save picture as, and save it to your hard drive.

On the next "icon upload day" (The 15th of each month) you can upload it under your "profile" settings.

I think John at David Lawrence does a fabulous job. He has great coins and fair prices.
  • The fact that this was a "pop 1" coin did definitely swing me towards buying this coin. BTW, I noticed on libertynickels.org that there are 3 coins graded Proof-63 between PCGS and NGC (e.g. 2 graded by NGC), so I guess it's not truly a pop 1. image

But that raises the question, which is generally considered the better service as far as grading proof cameos? In other words, would you think in general (sight unseen) that a PCGS PR63 cameo would be more desirable than an NGC PR63 cameo?

I think that NGC is more generous in giving the cameo designation.

  • One other question (might as well ask them all while they're on my mind) -- in general what is the premium put on the price of a cameo coin? I noticed, for example, that on PCGS's price guide, this coin lists as $275 in PR63 and $410 in PR64. I paid $305 for mine -- about 10% more than the non-cameo price and a quarter of the way between the 63 and 64 prices. That seems reasonable to me (and heck, at the end of the day, I liked the scan of the coin), but I'm wondering -- is there a general guideline for the "cameo premimum"?

a really neat coin! undervalued and a sleeper

i guess for me i cant say who does a better job with the designation

i do have my own thoughtrs on the matter though

    but i will say this

that when you get that neat proof cameo lib nick deside for yourself if you like it and if it has a neat cameo appearance just buy the coin if it is all there and the holder is just a bonus!

let us know when you get it

and i bet it is a really nice coin!

    sincerely michael
  • Maybe it's just that I don't know much about cameos (this is my first cameo purchase), or it may just be the way the pictures are taken, but what is it that makes the coin I bought a cameo, while this one isn't? Non-cameo

Still waiting for my coin (maybe today or tomorrow?)
  • Got the coin today, and it's a beaut! The mail was returned as undeliverable, even though they had sent it to the right address (gotta love the Post Office). But they contacted me promptly and sent it out again Express Mail. Kudos to David Lawrence!

I'll put my .02 in as well. I just bought a nice key coin from DLRC and was very happy with the price and the customer service.

I've bought about a half dozen IHCs from David Lawrence. Every purchase was a very positive experience for me. I highly recommend them. image
  • I love proof liberty head nickels. Had about 12 different dates at one time, was going for a full set of them, but sold them to finance other purchases. It looks like you're on your way. Good luck!image
