Complete Morgan Dollar Set

I just saw on Coin Vault that they are selling a complete set of Morgan Dollars excluding the 1895 for $7999.95. I was wondering if they really think that they are going to get anyone that has collected for years to buy this set or are they just trying to lure in the new collectors. I personally would not ever buy anything from Coin Vault but maybe some of you would. image

Not a chance I would EVER buy anything there but I'm sure some people find it very tempting. They know how to make things sound so "scarce" and "rare" at "unbelievable prices."

A few years ago I would watch the guys selling trading cards, and not knowing the regular price or rarity of them, though it sounded like a great deal. But you have to figure if it's on TV, the price is jacked up. They have a big overhead to cover. I passed on those and I'll pass on the coins too.

  • Wow! Spending $8000 on something from those guys! image As much as I like Morgan $s, I would never do that! What grade were they claiming they were? I think you can get sets in ave condition that are missing the 1895 for the mid $2000s can't you?image

If I were a novice collector I’d stay away from a raw 1893-S and 1889-CC. There are too many counterfeits of those coins around if you don’t what you are doing.

Actually a great many Morgan dollars become surprisingly cheap once you get below MS-60. I’ve seen these sets offered for less than half the asking price here. The only coins that are always expensive are the 1889-CC and the 1893-S. The rest can get real cheap in low grade.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I saw a 89-CC in a F-02 sell for $150. The 93-S is a killer.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

What fun is there in buying a complete set? Wouldn't it be more fun to search out each and every coin.image

  • JJacks- I do not know what the grades were on the the Morgans. I was just surfing through the channels and happened to notice that Coin Vault was on so and stopped and about that time they were changing it over to $50 gold Eagles graded by NGC. image
